Netflix Reveals Steamy K-Drama Adaptation of ‘Dangerous Liaisons’

Netflix is preparing its upcoming popular Korean drama series, tentatively titled “Scandals“. This show is an updated version of the 2003 Korean film “Untold Scandal“, which took the scandalous world of the French novel “Dangerous Liaisons” and set it in Korea’s Joseon era. The series will feature a high-profile cast, including Son Ye-jin (known from “Crash Landing on You“), Ji Chang-wook (from “Welcome to Samdal-ri“) and Nana, also known as Im Jina (famous for “Mask Girl“). Filming has already commenced in Seoul.

Under the guidance of renowned K-drama director Jung Ji-woo, known for “Somebody” and “Tune in for Love”, the series “Scandals” unfolds a thrilling tale of love and danger. It centers on an intricate love triangle involving the aristocratic Lady Cho (Son), the era’s most notorious playboy Cho Won (Ji), and the young, conflicted widow Hui-yeon (Nana). However, Hui-yeon is unwittingly caught in the middle of their dangerous game of love.

In the style of Korea’s Joseon era, the Netflix series “Scandals” vividly portrays a realm where love and temptation were considered unacceptable. The show follows characters who defy societal norms by indulging in a daring game of passion and seduction, a time when expressing desires was strictly prohibited, as suggested by the official synopsis.

In the 1980s, director Stephen Frears skillfully brought Pierre Choderlos de Laclos’ 18th-century novel “Dangerous Liaisons” to life on both stage and film. The movie version featured outstanding performances by Glenn Close, John Malkovich, Michelle Pfeiffer, and Uma Thurman, and it even received a nomination for the prestigious Best Picture Oscar.

Netflix provides a glimpse of Son’s character, Lady Cho, as a cunning strategist and a charismatic woman defying societal norms by making a clandestine bet on love. In this game of temptation, she proposes to her admirer, Cho Won (Ji), who is described as an alluring playboy skeptical about love, indulging in romantic affairs but not truly believing in it. He employs every means possible to win Lady Cho’s affection and their bet. Concurrently, Nana will portray the widow Hui-yeon, who swears to remain celibate following her husband’s demise, but finds herself entangled in a web of conflicting emotions and attraction towards Cho Won.

Information about the release of the show “Scandals” on Netflix has not been disclosed as of now, but there’s a high probability that we can expect its steamy episodes to premiere towards the end of this year.
