Well blow me down with a feather duster, I cannae help but feel all a-tingly about this latest offering from Netflix! As a wee Scottish lass who’s spent many a Hogmanay huddled round the fire with family, the idea of cozying up to a virtual fireplace in the world of Squid Game or Bridgerton is as exciting as a dram o’ whisky on New Year’s Eve.
It’s that festive time of year for the traditional Yule log! And if you’ve dreamt of relaxing by a hearth within the realms of Squid Game, Bridgerton, or Spellbound, now is your chance. This holiday season, Netflix is offering three unique variations of the classic fireplace program, streaming live on your device, ready to adorn your festive gatherings.
There’s no need to feel strange about finding a fireplace comforting in the office of Squid Game’s Front Man. After all, the unusual and eerie ambiance might be intentional, given its impact on viewers. Plus, remember that the second season is set to debut on December 26, 2024 – a day known as Boxing Day or the day after Christmas in the United Kingdom.
That said, there will be a few other yuletide offerings featuring fires roaring in thematically adorned fireplaces (which we first read about in The Hollywood Reporter), should you appreciate a more Regency-era living room or animated fire on the hillsides of Lumbria vibe. And according to the report, “All the Netflix themed Yule Log streams include Easter Eggs and bits of animation inspired by the shows along the way.”
What Is A Yule Log And Where Did The Tradition Originate?
Though the idea of a yule log is a tradition that goes back centuries, the televised iteration of it is a quintessentially American offering, with a history that dates back to the 1960s. Originally airing from 1966 to 1989 in New York City on its local television station WPIX, the station revived the broadcast in 2001 and found a resurgence of appreciation among Christmas celebrators. Running anywhere between two and four hours in duration, airing on Christmas Eve and/or Christmas morning, the program was meant to offer a break to news station employees to be able to spend time with their families during the holidays.
Normally, it consists of a continuous loop of a crackling yule log burning in a fireplace, accompanied by background music without any commercial breaks to disrupt the charming holiday atmosphere. This concept was initially developed by Fred M. Thrower, who was president and CEO of WPIX in 1966. Since then, it has inspired countless variations worldwide and online – from an amusing Adult Swim version in 2022, to a Home Alone themed one a few years ago, and even a Parks and Recreation-style Ron Swanson special in 2015 by Nick Offerman.
Currently, you can stream any of the three themed fireplaces offered by Netflix directly onto your screens – choose from the Squid Game, Bridgerton, or Spellbound fireplace by clicking on the respective links. If a classic yule log ambiance appeals to you but with a traditional feel, don’t worry! Netflix also provides a fireplace for home titled “Fireplace For Your Home.
Netflix’s themed Yule Logs are available to stream now.
