Netflix Unleash New Trailer & Reveal Release Date for Devil May Cry Anime Adaptation

As a veteran of cinema and gaming, having spent countless hours immersed in both worlds, I must say that the trailer for Netflix’s upcoming series, Devil May Cry, has certainly piqued my interest. The gore-filled teaser harks back to the game’s roots, promising a faithful adaptation that should satisfy longtime fans.

As a seasoned movie critic, I’ve witnessed the evolution of video game adaptations, moving beyond the early attempts like “Doom” and “Resident Evil,” which, despite their charm, were far from perfect. Streaming giant Netflix has proven adept at transforming games into captivating anime, with series like “Castlevania” and “Arcane.” Now, they’re aiming to maintain this hot streak by adapting another beloved franchise – “Devil May Cry.” This series, rooted in the era of the PlayStation 2, initially started as a spin-off from “Resident Evil 4,” but the developers chose a different path and crafted an entirely new game. Recently, Netflix has unveiled a tantalizing teaser trailer during Geeked Week, offering a glimpse into what’s to come. Take a look for yourself below!

It seems that the television show closely follows the video game series, implying plenty of graphic violence. The initial season contains eight episodes, with potential for additional seasons if the audience continues to support it.

There’s not a lot else known about the series yet other than Johnny Yong Bosch is voicing Dante, the series’ protagonist, with Reuben Langdon, the English Dante voice actor in the video game series, not being brought back to voice the character in the show. The series is helmed by Adi Shankar, the same creator who helped bring Castlevania to life for Netflix…and there even are rumors the two could crossover. That doesn’t automatically guarantee the same quality as that series, but it means viewers and fans should be in good hands.

Netflix Has a Solid Track Record When It Comes To Adapting Video Games

Time after time, video game adaptations have fallen flat. The latest example is “Borderlands”, a movie derived from an extremely successful video game series, which appears to be on course to become one of the biggest flops at the box office in 2024, and potentially one of the largest ever. Unlike Netflix, which has mainly focused on TV productions, they haven’t faced this issue, although their live-action “Resident Evil” series received a lot of criticism and was only able to continue for a single season.

Beyond this, Netflix has found success in transforming video games into television shows, particularly when they opt for animation. Shows like Arcane, Castlevania, Dota: Dragon’s Blood, Sonic: Prime, and many others have proven to be successful, and it doesn’t stop there. The team at Netflix seems to enjoy the results, as they continue to invest in the video game adaptation process. Upcoming projects include an animated Tomb Raider series and a series based on Tom Clancy’s Splinter Cell. It remains to be seen if Devil May Cry will join the ranks of Netflix successes or if it will turn out to be just another video game flop.
