Netflix Unveils New Films, Series From South Africa at MIP Africa

As a die-hard fan of South African storytelling and a connoisseur of Netflix’s global offerings, I couldn’t be more thrilled about the upcoming slate of content from my beloved homeland! The diversity and authenticity of these stories are a testament to the richness of our culture and the talent of our local storytellers.

At MIP Africa yesterday, I got a sneak peek at some exciting new movies and a series hailing from the vibrant film scene of South Africa, straight from Netflix!

Ben Amadasun, Vice President of Content at Netflix for the Middle East and Africa, revealed new program additions. These additions, according to Netflix, demonstrate their continued dedication to presenting genuine local narratives from South Africa in various formats and categories.

Coming soon will be a South African version of the global reality series “Love Never Lies”, as well as a new installment in the “Happiness” movie franchise, a four-part collection of standalone films, and a movie titled “Disaster Holiday”.

“Amadasun expressed great enthusiasm about further developing connections with our production collaborators in South Africa, and showcasing unique, homegrown narratives created by local talents to both our local and global viewership. We’ve noticed that South African tales aren’t just popular within the country; they’ve also gained a dedicated following internationally. This is merely a sneak peek into what Netflix has planned next in terms of delivering local South African and worldwide stories to our 278 million subscribers globally.”

The South African version of the globally-created reality program by Rapid Blue centers around six couples undergoing a lie detector test using eye scanning technology. In this series, dishonesty leads to financial loss, while honesty brings rewards. According to the show’s summary, each episode will unveil the truth, with the first episodes becoming accessible on Netflix starting November 29.

“Initially, we had ‘Happiness Is a 4 Letter Word’, followed by ‘Happiness Ever After’. Now, on October 18th, Netflix brings us more of the joyful journey in ‘Happiness Is’. This romantic comedy series installment follows a group of friends as they confront their flaws and their friendship. Will they manage to support each other’s happiness while navigating the challenges of finding personal contentment? The film is produced by Blingola Media, helmed by Lesedi Siswana, with Bongiwe Selane overseeing both creative and executive production.”

Originating from Stained Glass TV, renowned creators of popular South African shows, is an upcoming four-part series of feature films titled Umjolo, which will be released monthly until February 2025, as announced by the streaming service. The initial film in this series, named Umjolo: The Gone Girl, follows the life of a young woman who has an ideal boyfriend – loving, supportive, attentive, and handsome. She feels on cloud nine when she gets engaged to him, but everything changes after a routine doctor’s appointment. You can catch Umjolo: The Gone Girl on Netflix starting November 8.

“This upcoming holiday season, Burnt Onion Productions is set to deliver another entertaining and humorous production, following their successful series on Netflix such as ‘How to Ruin Christmas’, ‘How to Ruin Love’, ‘Lobola Man’, and ‘Seriously Single’. The new film, titled ‘Disaster Holiday‘, will feature the Ramaphakela siblings, who are bringing fans a fresh story about a workaholic striving to prove his worth as a father and husband by taking his family on an unexpected vacation.
