As a longtime aficionado of cinema and a connoisseur of Westerns, I can’t help but feel a sense of excitement that rivals the galloping pace of a wild mustang upon seeing the trailer for “American Primeval.” The prospect of Taylor Kitsch reteaming with Peter Berg, who masterfully brought to life the small-town drama of Friday Night Lights, promises a potent blend of raw Western action and character depth.
It’s clear that the Western genre is experiencing a comeback, fueled by shows such as Yellowstone and 1883. Now, Netflix joins the fray with the six-part thriller American Primeval, starring Taylor Kitsch. This series brings Kitsch together once more with Peter Berg, who directed the 2004 film and later developed the 2006 hit series where Kitsch played the character Tim Riggins from Friday Night Lights.
A fresh trailer for the upcoming series titled “American Primeval” has been released (see below), offering a sneak peek into its thrilling content, which stars Saura Lightfoot Leon, Betty Gilpin, Jai Courtney, and Shea Whigham, among others. Intriguingly, Preston Mota’s voice asks, “What do you think’s out there?” as he embodies the character of Devin Rowell. His mother, Sara (Gilpin), replies, “Your father.” After showcasing breathtaking landscapes, the trailer takes a turn for the ominous, promising all the intense Old West action that one could desire.
1857 marks the backdrop for American Primeval, a captivating exploration of the struggle for dominance in the American West. This riveting tale delves into the clash between culture, faith, and society as they violently intersect. The intrigue generated by the trailer has us eagerly awaiting its release, but if that isn’t enough to pique your curiosity, read on for a comprehensive overview of the series.
1857 America, a world turned upside down. Pain and turmoil dominate, while tranquility and innocence seem to be on the losing side against hatred and fear. Peace feels like an endangered species, with grace being a rare commodity, and compassion almost non-existent. There’s no sanctuary in these harsh territories; survival is the only goal that matters.
Peter Berg and Taylor Kitsch Have the Potential to Create Old West Magic
Alongside his work on a brand-new Western series (a first for him), Berg is also contemplating a return to the world of Friday Night Lights, potentially bringing us back to the town of Dillon, Texas. There’s talk about a revival that might not strictly follow the original storyline but instead offer a fresh narrative within the same universe, featuring new stories and characters. At this point, specifics about the project are limited.
It’s uncertain whether any of the original cast members, including Kitsch, will make an appearance, but that doesn’t stop Kitsch from staying active since his time on the cherished series. He landed a lead role in HBO’s True Detective, portrayed David Koresh in Waco, and made a cameo in Netflix’s 2023 drama, Painkiller. His recent notable role has been as Ben Edwards in the Prime Video series Terminal List, which has been renewed for a second season and is now in pre-production.
While he may not have A-list status compared to some other high-profile names, don’t sleep on Kitsch, or American Primeval when it premieres on Jan. 9. He’s proven himself to be a compelling actor when given the chance to shine, and with Berg by his side, we have no doubt that the Netflix Western series will offer something fresh in a genre that’s quickly becoming saturated in the television space.
