Netflix is aggressively expanding its presence in the realm of anime, mirroring its success with traditional television. Over the past few years, it has unveiled critically-acclaimed adaptations like “Cyberpunk: Edgerunners” and “Castlevania,” and at the end of 2024, it introduced one of the wildest new anime yet – “Dandadan.” It is also releasing the underappreciated series “Orb: On the Movements of the Earth,” and the second season of “My Happy Marriage” is currently airing weekly. In the upcoming year, Netflix aims to conquer the action genre with a “John Wick”-esque action comedy that could be the blockbuster hit of 2025 – “Sakamoto Days.
On January 11th, the anime series “Sakamoto Days” will debut on Netflix, based on the manga by Yuto Suzuki. The story revolves around Taro Sakamoto, a retired hitman who finds himself thrust back into action after a billion yen bounty is put on his head. Despite wanting to live a peaceful life with his family, Taro must defend himself without resorting to lethal force. However, his wife threatens to leave him if he ever takes another life again. To add to the challenge, Taro is no longer in peak physical condition.
Initial previews for the upcoming anime series “Sakamoto Days” hint at exhilarating action scenes alongside the quirky humor of a hitman attempting to settle into an ordinary existence. Produced by TMS Entertainment, known for shows like “Dr. Stone“, and directed by Masaki Watanabe (“Terra e…“), the first season is set to premiere. Notably, popular Japanese musician Vaundy has penned the opening theme song, titled “Run Sakamoto Run,” which was recently unveiled. The official summary for the series goes as follows:
“Follow the extraordinary life of Sakamoto, a hitman with an exceptional talent for blending into the mundane world, yet always finding himself in the most bizarre situations.
Meet Taro Sakamoto, once known as the deadliest assassin, both loathed by evildoers and respected by fellow killers. However, an unexpected turn of events led him to fall in love, retire from his lethal career, get married, and start a family. Fast forward, he’s now a plump man running the local store. But what if danger comes knocking on his peaceful life? Prepare for a fresh take on action comedy as we follow this former legend as he tries to shield his loved ones!
‘Sakamoto Days’ Will Release on Netflix in Two Parts
The anime series titled “Sakamoto Days” debuts on Netflix on January 11th. This first season has been split into two parts, with the first part starting in January and spanning across 11 episodes. The second part will start streaming in July, also consisting of 11 episodes. In total, Season 1 will encompass 22 episodes. Fans are thrilled because “Sakamoto Days” is receiving a complete first season with 22 episodes, unlike the shorter 11-13 episode seasons that many new anime adaptations offer.
If you’re just starting out with anime and have a soft spot for action (who wouldn’t?), the series Sakamoto Days could be an excellent introduction. This anime will combine the manga’s amusing and heartwarming moments, all while translating its stunningly imaginative action scenes onto the screen. Despite vowing not to kill his wife, Taro Sakamoto comes up with clever strategies to defeat his foes, resulting in fight sequences reminiscent of Jackie Chan.
