In Season 2 of Netflix’s “Avatar: The Last Airbender,” the beloved character Toph Beifong from the Nickelodeon animated series is set to join Team Avatar. This role will be played by Miya Cech, known for her work in “The Rim of the World.” In the original animated series, Toph was introduced in Season 2 and soon became one of Aang’s closest companions, also serving as his earthbending instructor. While Season 1 of Netflix’s adaptation made significant departures from the original, fans were eager to see if Toph would remain true to form. As suggested by Miya Cech, her portrayal of Toph shares many similarities with the animated version, but with a few variations.
During an interview at the 2024 Unforgettable Gala with Pacific Rim Video Press, actress Cech shared her portrayal of Toph in the upcoming live-action version of “Avatar: The Last Airbender.” As the new season will slightly deviate from the animated series to match the remake’s tone, Cach mentioned that Toph will be older now and no longer a child. Nevertheless, she assured fans of the original that they will immediately recognize and develop an affection for the live-action Toph. She added:
She remains the feisty, lively individual I’ve come to know, affectionately referring to another person as ‘Twinkle Toes’.
Toph Beifong is Miya Cech’s Dream Role
The initial season of Netflix’s “Avatar: The Last Airbender” sparked controversy among its audience. While some critics disliked the series for giving a more somber twist to a beloved Nickelodeon children’s show and modifying significant story arcs, numerous fans embraced it as a refreshing reinterpretation of the original program. Miya Cech hinted that her portrayal of Toph will cater to a variety of viewers. She went on to say:
I believe many elements from the animated series will stick in the minds of fans, as well as numerous fresh aspects.
In contrast to the poorly received M. Night Shyamalan film (with fans everywhere agreeing there’s no live-action version of “Avatar” in Ba Sing Se), Toph Beifong was notably missing. Fortunately, she was expected to appear in a sequel that thankfully never materialized. Now, fans are overjoyed at the prospect of seeing Toph in live-action during Season 2 of Netflix’s show. However, it’s hard to imagine anyone being as enthusiastic as Miya Cech herself, who shared during an interview that playing Toph Beifong is one of her career’s ultimate dreams.
She expressed her enthusiasm, saying, “I am absolutely thrilled! She was the first Asian character I ever saw on TV that truly resonated with me. I’ve grown up watching this show, and I’ve dreamed of playing this role since I was 10 years old.
Production on the second season of “Avatar: The Last Airbender” is underway, following the successful debut of Season 1. Netflix has confirmed that the series will continue for two more seasons beyond this one, wrapping up with its third season. As of now, an official release date for Season 2 has yet to be announced.
