As a seasoned viewer of countless crime dramas and spy thrillers, I must admit that “Black Doves” has left a lasting impression on me. The series masterfully intertwines the personal lives of its characters with the high-stakes world of espionage, creating a captivating narrative that keeps you hooked till the very end.
Warning: Spoilers for Black Doves.
Taking place in London during the pre-Christmas weeks, “Black Doves” is the recently released spy thriller series on Netflix, starring Keira Knightley as Helen Webb. As an agent for the Black Doves, an organization that retrieves valuable secrets like industrial, political, or diplomatic information for the highest bidders, Helen’s unique position as the wife of the UK’s Defense Secretary makes her exceptionally skilled at data collection. The narrative kicks off with the demise of Helen’s beloved, Jason Davies, a civil servant played by Andrew Koji.
Without any information about who murdered him or the reason behind it, Reed (Sarah Lancashire), Helen’s supervisor at Black Doves, brings in Sam (Ben Whishaw), a hitman and an old friend of Helen’s, as a safeguard since there might be more victims. Fueled by revenge, Helen starts investigating Jason’s death on her own. Not long after, she crosses paths with other assassins and uncovers a broader conspiracy that ties the UK government to London’s criminal network.
In my movie-loving perspective, here’s how I’d rephrase it: While I, as Helen, am on the hunt for Jason’s killer, my husband, Wallace, finds himself tangled in a brewing political quagmire surrounding the mysterious demise of the Chinese ambassador. Just before Jason breathed his last, the ambassador was discovered lifeless in Kai-Ming’s apartment, daughter of the Chinese diplomat. The English authorities ruled it a drug overdose, but the Chinese government is skeptical and even hint at American involvement. Matters escalate further when Kai-Ming vanishes without a trace.
In light of the increasing number of deaths happening around the city, it’s evident to Helen that everything seems intertwined. Not too much later, she encounters Elmore Fitch (Paapa Essiedu), the man who took Jason’s life, but he was merely an accomplice. She ends up taking his life herself, yet finds no information about who had hired him other than they suspect Helen has a secret recording device that Jason may have given her before his demise. As more and more queries surface regarding this potentially incriminating recording, Helen and Sam need to unravel the truth behind Jason’s death and understand how it ties in with the Chinese ambassador’s passing.

A Cover-Up Links London’s Crime Family and Top UK Officials
The story, filled with unexpected events, surprisingly reveals a straightforward origin. It all started when the Chinese ambassador passed away under mysterious circumstances, linked to his daughter Kai-Ming. Given her lifestyle, Kai-Ming had questionable acquaintances, such as Trent (Angus Cooper). Being the son of Alex Clark (Tracey Ullman), a notorious crime boss with ties in the UK government, Trent was able to provide Kai-Ming with illegal substances. This led to an altercation between the ambassador and Trent at Kai-Ming’s apartment. In a moment of panic, Trent pushed the ambassador, causing him to fall and fatally injure himself. Trent’s mother, in collusion with a corrupt UK official named Stephen Yarrick (Sam Troughton) and the aid of the Prime Minister, then manipulated evidence to make the death appear as if it were due to a drug overdose.
The situation became even more convoluted due to Kai-Ming’s friend Maggie (Hannah Khalique-Brown), who was secretly providing stories to a tabloid journalist, Philip Bray (Thomas Coombes), through a hidden recording device in Kai-Ming’s apartment. Unbeknownst to her, she had recorded the ambassador’s death. As things unfolded, Maggie found herself in deep trouble. Philip also got hold of the footage and started questioning certain government officials about the incident. This action triggered Yarrick to reach out to the Clark family. To hide his actions, Trent started tailing Philip, eventually leading him to Maggie. Jason was then brought into the picture because he knew Maggie, which in turn led Trent to Helen. After this point, events took a deadly turn and the search for the recording device commenced.
As Helen inadvertently got closer to discovering the truth, the Clark family fatally struck Yarrick. This made finding Kai-Ming all the more crucial, which Sam eventually achieved. However, it was Hector Newman, someone Sam had been hired to eliminate seven years ago but couldn’t because he was too young at the time, who was holding Kai-Ming captive. With assistance from other assassins named Williams (Ella Lily Hyland) and Eleanor (Gabrielle Creevy), Sam managed to free Kai-Ming and chose not to harm Hector again. While they were hiding in Williams and Eleanor’s apartment, the Clarks stormed in, kidnapping both Kai-Ming and Eleanor. When Sam tried to save them, he too was taken captive, leaving Helen and Williams to take action independently.
Helen Finds the Recording and Discovers the Truth
As I unwrapped Jason’s Christmas gift, a sense of intrigue struck me when I found he’d left a clue hidden within. Following this trail, I stumbled upon a recording device at the very jewelry store where Maggie had worked. The video played, but it didn’t provide all the answers I sought – why did Jason meet his untimely end?
In this situation, Trent is arguing with Helen while Sam is attempting to prevent her from causing harm. Meanwhile, Alex is reaching for Helen’s gun. A struggle ensues, leading to Sam shooting and killing Alex, followed by him shooting and killing Trent as well, seemingly intending to shield Helen from the guilt of being a killer like himself. The gunfire triggers a shootout between the Americans and Chinese outside, who had been informed about the recording and the Clarks’ location. Everybody outside is killed except for CIA Agent Cole Atwood (Finn Bennett), whom Helen hands the recording to before departing the scene.
After everything that unfolded, it turned out that the Prime Minister was ousted from office, paving the way for Wallace to take over. Meanwhile, Helen had a meeting with Reed, who shared all the details about what truly transpired and why. It was then that she discovered that it was Maggie’s trust in Jason that led to his demise, as he was an MI5 agent just like her. His mission was to collect information on Helen as a potential threat, information that came close to shattering her. Despite their shared history, she had confided in him about certain truths regarding her identity. However, Reed revealed that the day before Jason’s death, he submitted a report stating that after a comprehensive investigation, there was no evidence suggesting that Helen was a spy, a selfless act on his part, despite the potential dangers it posed.
Following the resolution and disclosure of events, Helen firmly establishes herself within the Black Doves as they gear up for her husband’s upcoming role as Prime Minister. Sam finds employment with Hector and repays his long-standing debt to Lenny (Kathryn Hunter) from the past incident involving Hector. After a decade of cherished companionship, Sam chooses to celebrate Christmas with Helen and her family, who he had not previously met. The series wraps up on an optimistic note, hinting at possibilities for a future season.
