As a passionate film enthusiast, I can’t help but acknowledge Netflix’s impressive stride in the anime realm. They’ve been consistently building a solid reputation by introducing thrilling original series on their streaming platform. In 2024 alone, they introduced critically acclaimed series such as Dragon Ball Daima, Delicious in Dungeon, and Mononoke the Movie: Phantom in the Rain.
Moreover, Netflix has been setting trends within animated content, particularly in video game adaptations. They’ve given us captivating series like Arcane, Castlevania, Onimusha, and Tekken: Bloodline. These offerings not only satisfy my craving for quality anime but also demonstrate their commitment to innovation and excellence.
The news that Netflix plans to adapt Capcom’s popular series, Devil May Cry, has certainly generated a lot of excitement due to Netflix’s impressive history. Here’s what we know so far ahead of its release on April 3, 2025.
The announcement that Netflix is adapting the Capcom franchise, Devil May Cry, has understandably sparked enthusiasm, considering Netflix’s stellar reputation. With a scheduled release date of April 3, 2025, here are the details we have in store for its premiere.
The Legacy of ‘Devil May Cry’ Finally Makes It to the Screen
As a dedicated cinephile of digital cinema, I’d like to share my excitement about the groundbreaking action series, Devil May Cry, crafted by Hideki Kamiya and masterfully developed by Capcom. Originally conceived as an addition to the renowned Resident Evil franchise, it underwent a significant transformation following the shift from Resident Evil 4 to the dynamic action-adventure we now cherish.
The first installment, Devil May Cry, graced our screens in 2001 on PlayStation 2, swiftly establishing itself as a genre-defining classic with its high-octane battles. The iconic antihero, Dante – a demon-hunting maverick – quickly became the face of Sony’s gaming roster. Over the years, this captivating series has birthed numerous sequels: Devil May Cry 2 (2003), Devil May Cry 3: Dante’s Awakening (2005), Devil May Cry 4 (2008), DmC: Devil May Cry (2013), and the latest addition, Devil May Cry 5 (2019).
The game series has amassed an impressive global fanbase of over 32 million, resulting in a wealth of spin-offs, merchandise, and adaptations across various entertainment platforms.
In 2007, the first animated series based on Devil May Cry, titled Devil May Cry: The Animated Series, was released. Unfortunately, this one-season show failed to meet the expectations of fans due to a lack of action and an unconvincing portrayal of Dante. Now, Netflix’s Devil May Cry series is aiming to be the ultimate adaptation for the game franchise, as it seeks to surpass the underwhelming performance of the 2007 attempt.
The Proven Success of the Team behind ‘Devil May Cry’
Netflix’s popular series, “Castlevania,” spanned four seasons to widespread acclaim. Developed by Warren Ellis and produced by Frederator Studios and Shankar Animation, this show showcased a sophisticated, dark gothic aesthetic that brilliantly brought the world to life. In the upcoming “Devil May Cry,” Adi Shankar, whose studio played a crucial role in bringing Castlevania and its sequel Castlevania: Nocturne to the screen, returns as a key figure. Known for his energetic and unconventional demeanor, as well as his passion for all things dark and nerd-related, Adi Shankar is no stranger to pushing boundaries and blending styles while staying true to the source material. With the series being described as “by a DMC fan for DMC fans,” existing enthusiasts should be eagerly anticipating it.
I am delighted to be collaborating with writer Alex Larsen, who previously worked alongside Shankar on the Netflix miniseries “Captain Laserhawk: A Blood Dragon Remix.” Studio Mir will also contribute their exceptional talents to the project, having made waves in the animation industry with hit shows and films such as “The Legend of Korra” (2012-2014) and “The Witcher: Nightmare of the Wolf” (2021). In this production, it will be voice actor Johnny Yong Bosch who breathes life into our character Dante. Known for his success in both live-action and animated roles, Bosch’s portrayal of Kaneda in the English dub of 1988’s Akira has long been cherished by fans.
What We Know About the Plot and Format of ‘Devil May Cry’
The show will draw inspiration from the storyline of Devil May Cry 3, blending in aspects from its prequel comic, focusing primarily on Dante’s past, his bond with his twin brother Vergil, and his alliance with Lady. Expect intense, action-packed sequences filled with demonic battles. Moreover, since Dante is our central character, a half-demon mercenary and a hired demon hunter, we can anticipate other fan favorites like Nero to possibly make an appearance. Characters from Devil May Cry 3 such as Trish, J.D. Morrison, and Arkham might also come into play.
The upcoming series, Devil May Cry, is scheduled for release on Netflix on April 3, 2025. This release will include all eight episodes at once. As it gears up for a potential multi-season run, its initial goal is to win over the fanbase by delivering an exceptional video game adaptation when it debuts. In the meantime, take a look at the trailer below and gear up with excitement!
