Netflix’s New K-Drama Medical Spinoff Takes the World by Storm—You Won’t Believe Its Rise!

A Netflix-produced medical drama spinoff from South Korea has gained international acclaim. Netflix is a well-known streaming platform that provides access to numerous licensed films and television shows, but it’s their original content that truly sets them apart. Among the many popular series on the service are the modern take on the Addams Family titled “Wednesday”, the romantic Regency-era drama “Bridgerton”, the suspenseful action-thriller “The Night Agent”, the sci-fi fantasy series set in the 1980s called “Stranger Things”, and the true crime anthology show “Monster”.

Despite a majority of their well-known series being in English, Netflix’s K-dramas have gained significant popularity recently. The survival thriller Squid Game stands out as their most successful title, with season 1 being the most viewed season of any series on the platform across all languages, while season 2 ranks third, only behind Wednesday season 1. Other popular Korean shows on Netflix include the zombie drama All of Us Are Dead, the horror series Sweet Home, and the crime drama spinoff Money Heist: Korea – Joint Economic Area.

Resident Playbook Is Thriving On Netflix

The Show Is A Spinoff From A 2020 Hit

The “Resident Playbook” has made its way onto a significant Netflix ranking. This limited series is a spin-off from the widely acclaimed 2020 South Korean medical drama, “Hospital Playlist,” and focuses on the challenges faced by first-year OBGYN resident Oh Yi-young (Go Youn-jung), who works at the Jongno branch of the Yulje Medical Center. Although a third season of “Hospital Playlist” never materialized, this new show has stepped in, released about three and a half years after the series finale, with fresh episodes airing on Saturdays and Sundays on tvN and Netflix in selected regions.

For the week of April 7 to 13, Netflix has compiled their global ranking of the most-watched non-English shows. The newcomer “Resident Playbook” entered the top 10 with an impressive 1.1 million viewers and accumulated a total of 3.1 million viewing hours. During that week, the show was among the top viewed in Indonesia, South Korea, Taiwan, and Vietnam. It’s noteworthy that “Resident Playbook” is currently charting alongside several popular Korean series such as “Friendly Rivalry” (at No. 9), “Weak Hero: Class 1” (at No. 7), “Kian’s Bizarre B&B” (at No. 6), “When Life Gives You Tangerines” (at No. 3), and “Karma” (at No. 2).

What This Means For Resident Playbook

The Show Could Continue To Grow

As a movie enthusiast, I’m thrilled to share that the early success of “Resident Playbook,” having just aired its first two episodes, indicates a promising future for this K-drama. With more episodes dropping over the next six weeks, I can’t help but anticipate a steady increase in viewing hours. If the series maintains its upward trajectory, it might even capture the interest of viewers beyond Asia, potentially breaking into the Top 10 lists in other regions and significantly boosting its global viewership.

The “Resident Playbook” series can be watched on Netflix every Saturday and Sunday at 21:10 (Korean Standard Time) until May 18th, in certain regions.
