Netflixs New Sci-Fi Anime Dandadan Gets High Praise From Video Game Icon Hideo Kojima

As a long-time connoisseur of the eccentric and bizarre in the realm of anime and video games, I find myself utterly captivated by the audacious and outlandish spectacle that is “Dandadan”. Being a child of the same generation as Hideo Kojima, whose masterful works have consistently pushed the boundaries of conventional storytelling, it’s no surprise that this anime has piqued his interest.

The freshly released “Dandadan” anime has left its fanbase awestruck with its stunning animation and faithful, unfiltered adaptation of Yukinobu Tatsu’s wildly eccentric manga. It’s not just captivating long-time fans, but also attracting the notice of a contemporary gaming legend, and one of X’s most influential unofficial reviewers… Hideo Kojima. Known for crafting the Metal Gear video game series, Death Stranding, and the sadly neglected PT (Playable Teaser), this gaming titan has voiced his genuine thoughts about the new anime on social media.

After the debut of the show on Netflix and CrunchyRoll, Hideo Kojima expressed his positive feedback to his devoted fanbase, which comes as no surprise given his affinity for the anime series Dandadan. Given Kojima’s reputation for creating unconventional, rule-breaking video games with a touch of the surreal and strange, it’s only fitting that he would be drawn to an extravagant anime production featuring aliens, ghosts, and misplaced testicles. In his informal review, Kojima mentioned that, like most viewers, he hadn’t previously read the manga, but his childhood fascination with UFOs and the supernatural made him instantly realize that Dandadan was just the series for him. Kojima penned:

Instead of continuously reading, I took a break and checked my subscriptions instead. The new anime “Dandadan” had been released, so I opted to watch the initial episode. Although I haven’t read the original manga, given that I belong to a generation captivated by supernatural phenomena and UFOs, it struck a chord with me. In my youth, I occasionally flipped through “Mu” magazine as well. The animation style of Science SARU, particularly their innovative use of lenses, appeals to me. Moreover, it’s comforting to learn that Naoyuki Onda, a fellow member of my generation, is responsible for the character designs. Shion Wakayama is also featured in it, so I plan on continuing to watch this show.

On October 3rd, the debut episode of “Dandadan” became available for viewing on Crunchyroll, with further episodes being rolled out each week on this platform as well as other streaming services.

Dandadan Follows a Bizarre Story of Ghosts & UFOs

Apart from being a strong contender for the year’s top anime, Dandadan stands out as the most peculiar. Unlike most anime premieres that are bogged down by exposition, setting up main characters, their backstories, and life objectives – like becoming pirate king (One Piece), rescuing a demonic sibling (Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yabai), or coping with an obsession (Chainsaw Man), we might have overlooked just how strange Chainsaw Man is. However, following the first episode of Dandadan, many viewers who haven’t read the manga find themselves more bewildered than ever.

In this episode, we meet the two main characters, Momo and Okarun, who hold contrasting beliefs – Momo is convinced about UFOs, whereas Okarun swears by ghosts. Desiring to debunk each other’s theories, they venture to deserted spots where both UFO sightings and ghostly apparitions have taken place. However, both turn out to be mistaken in their assumptions. Momo falls prey to alien physicians intent on collecting her reproductive organs, while Okarun encounters an ancient, insatiable old spirit who is a grandma. The story then unfolds into a fascinating journey marked by captivating visuals, excellent music, and a dangerous quest to retrieve Okarun’s misplaced testicles.
