As a mother who has been through the trials and tribulations of divorce, I must say that Netflix’s latest animation, “Spellbound,” left me feeling quite underwhelmed. The storyline, while attempting to tackle a sensitive topic, felt like it was handled with a lack of care and depth.
People often experience a little or even a significant flutter in their hearts whenever Netflix unveils a new animated movie. Regardless of age, there’s an undeniable charm about animated films that stirs up pleasant memories from the past and sparks curiosity about the meaningful topics explored. Over the past few years, Netflix has rolled out several hit animations like “The Sea Beast”, “Leo”, and “Orion and the Dark” that appeal to viewers of all ages.
In a turn of events, another animation titled “Spellbound” made its debut on Netflix on November 22nd. With lofty anticipation, viewers were eager to immerse themselves in the film’s enchanting world and significant themes. Regrettably, the show fell short in many aspects; however, it did shine a light on one exceptional element: Rachel Zegler’s performance.

What Is Netflix’s ‘Spellbound’ About?
Netflix’s latest animated offering is titled “Spellbound“, premiering on November 22 with an impressive ensemble of voice talents including Rachel Zegler, Nicole Kidman, and Javier Bardem. In this captivating tale, we follow a teenage princess named Ellian who experiences a drastic change in her life when her parents were transformed into monsters by a curse. Since then, she’s had to navigate life independently, but she firmly believes that the essence of her parents – their souls and minds – remain trapped within their transformed bodies.
In an effort to restore them before time runs out, Ellian sets off on a tumultuous adventure accompanied by her parents. Her mission involves not just reinstating her parents as rulers of Lumbria once more, but also returning to the old days. She yearns for their shared moments, their wise counsel, and the simple joy of being a child. However, she’s unaware that nothing can ever return to exactly how it was before.
‘Spellbound’ Could Have Worked But Sort of Failed
The fundamental concept seemed sound, but unfortunately, the execution was flawed. The narrative in the majority of the film suggested a potential exploration of a heavy theme like divorce. However, when it came to fruition, it fell short due to poor execution that left many questioning the believability and speed of events unfolding. In fact, several critics argue that the movie Spellbound conveys harmful messaging.
In the final 30 minutes of the Netflix animation, the true problems surfaced, causing a dramatic shift in atmosphere. Shortly after regaining consciousness, Ellian’s parents revealed that they couldn’t return to their old ways. Essentially, they decided to end things permanently. Although they didn’t discuss it with Ellian, she was overwhelmed by a storm of negative feelings and believed her parents no longer cared for her. Upon witnessing their daughter in turmoil, they realized the error of their ways and forgetting about her.
In essence, expressing the effect of divorce on children is admirable, but handling such a delicate subject requires great caution. For instance, the film director justifies the movie’s themes, but it seems they spent too much time elaborating on unnecessary and even dull aspects in the first two-thirds, leaving little room for the crucial parts in the final half hour. Regrettably, the significant portion of the story, like the disclosure of the divorce and Ellian’s emotions, is rushed through, which could have been beneficial to children by imparting valuable lessons if presented effectively – something that, as we’ve seen, Spellbound failed to achieve.
Rachel Zegler Carries the New Netflix Animation
As a dedicated fan, I can’t help but appreciate one outstanding achievement in the movie “Spellbound”: the brilliant decision to cast Rachel Zegler as the voice of the main character, Ellian. Known for taking on the lead role in Disney’s debated reimagining of “Snow White,” Rachel brings a flawless balance of speaking and singing skills to the teenage princess, making her performance truly captivating.
People who recognize her from her roles as María in West Side Story or Lucy Gray Baird in The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes are well aware that Zegler’s voice is truly captivating. What stands out the most, however, is her singing ability, which perfectly suits the genre of animation. She is incredibly skilled at conveying genuine emotions and boasts an impressive vocal range. Despite the less engaging narrative, it speaks volumes about Zegler’s talent that she can still capture people’s interest to some extent.
Without her performance, many might have stopped watching within the first 15 minutes. Zegler brings the catchy tunes to life in a way that makes viewers feel as if they’re standing right in front of a microphone with her, enjoying every moment and getting lost in the enchanting world of Lumbria. Although some found the visuals of this magical world less appealing and the story itself didn’t resonate with the audience, Zegler’s voice managed to captivate them nonetheless. Despite some controversy surrounding Rachel Zegler, her talent is undoubtedly commendable.
In essence, the recently released animated series by Netflix, titled Spellbound, lacks depth and substance, failing to resonate with both children and adults alike. It’s an underwhelming effort to tackle a profound and relatable topic that spans generations, giving the impression of being half-heartedly executed. Spellbound may only serve as a brief distraction during this season, lingering in the minds of viewers for a short while due to Rachel Zegler’s delightful vocal performance. Don’t forget to stream Spellbound on Netflix.
