As a lifelong fan of science fiction and comic books, the upcoming Netflix series, “The Eternaut,” has piqued my interest immensely. Having grown up reading comics, I vividly remember the thrill of discovering new worlds and heroes that captivated my imagination. The fact that this adaptation is based on a beloved classic like Héctor Germán Oesterheld’s “The Eternaut” only heightens my anticipation.
In an already alarming context of global warming, the latest Netflix series, “The Eternaut,” brings a chilling twist with extraterrestrial elements. Originating from the classic comic book bearing the same name by Héctor Germán Oesterheld and Francisco Solano López, “The Eternaut” portrays a catastrophic event where Buenos Aires, Argentina, is bombarded with toxic snowfall, instantly claiming lives of those who come into contact. As the death toll rises, peculiar occurrences within the city leave survivors suspecting that something far more ominous is at work.
As a dedicated fan of science fiction, I am genuinely excited about the upcoming series “The Eternaut.” Having grown up reading comic books and watching numerous sci-fi shows, I have always been captivated by the genre’s ability to explore complex themes while also providing thrilling visual spectacles. From the first trailer, it seems that Bruno Stagnaro has managed to encapsulate both aspects masterfully, showcasing a stunningly desolate landscape and delving into the terrifying repercussions of interacting with an otherworldly substance.
Following a catastrophic event where a lethal snowstorm laced with toxins wipes out millions, Juan Salvo and a band of survivors huddled in Buenos Aires find themselves battling an ominous extraterrestrial danger lurking unseen.
The comic book titled “The Eternaut” was published from 1957 to 1959 and gained worldwide popularity, even earning an Eisner Award. For Stagnaro, this specific comic has been a part of his life since he turned 10 years old, and he’s drawing upon his childhood memories of reading it for the first time while adapting it. In conversation with Netflix, he shared:
When I was ten, [The Eternaut] was the first graphic novel I read cover to cover. As a movie critic, my aim in adapting this masterpiece is to capture the essence of wonder felt by that young reader encountering the story for the first time. I want to recreate the raw emotion of living an adventure within the familiar confines of your neighborhood, and bring to life the great Argentine hero, Juan Salvo, who graced its pages.
