Netflix’s upcoming series The Residence will pay tribute to the late actor Andre Braugher, with a title card in his memory at the end of the show’s eight-episode season. Braugher was set to star in the show as White House Chief Usher A.B. Wynter, in a key role that would have no doubt added to his other memorable TV turns, including playing Captain Raymond Holt on Brooklyn Nine-Nine and Detective Frank Pembleton on Homicide: Life on the Street. He joined the cast of the Shondaland series in February 2023 but didn’t complete production as he died in December 2023 of lung cancer.
Paul William Davies, who created The Residence for Netflix, told Deadline that an “In Memory” title card will appear at the end of the series, which is slated to premiere on Mar. 20, to honor Braugher, who had filmed several episodes before he passed away. Davies explained that the team gave careful consideration to the placement of the tribute. He acknowledged that while it might be expected at the start of the series, they felt it was poignant to add it to the very end of the eight-episode run as a final mark of respect, encompassing his involvement with the show.
“There might have been a natural inclination to do that after the first episode, but for me, it was important to do that at the end of the whole series, to say, you were part of all this, and we have not forgotten you.”
The Residence takes inspiration from the New York Times number one bestseller The Residence: Inside the Private World of the White House by Kate Andersen Brower, revealing the inner workings of the White House through its staff members. However, the comedic mystery thriller will put a dramatic twist on the concept by throwing a murder mystery into the mix. While the trailer showcased plenty of laughs, there will also be some serious moments, not least of which includes a speech that Davies wrote into the script after Braugher’s death. The dialogue touched the cast members, with Susan Kelechi Watson recalling how “special” it was to hear it out loud for the first time.
“In the last episode, it felt almost like a eulogy to Andre when Uzo [Aduba] speaks about A.B. Wynter. I remember that day, it was so special to hear it out loud. It was the first time we all got to be in the space and kind of mourn with one another over Andre in this and the special life that he lived.”
Giancarlo Esposito Was Recast in the Role
The team behind The Residence ultimately decided to recast the role of A.B. Wynter, with Giancarlo Esposito stepping in to replace Braugher. Davies admitted that it wasn’t an easy call to make, but they were grateful that Esposito agreed to take on the role, as he was close to the late actor. In fact, Esposito starred in Homicide: Life on the Street following Braugher’s exit from the NBC drama after six seasons and the duo later appeared together in the show’s follow-up TV movie, aptly titled Homicide: The Movie, which hit screens in 2000. Davies said Esposito honored his friend with grace:
“It was brutal and it was really hard for so many of us. We were lucky enough that Giancarlo, who also knew Andre, was close to him and had the deepest respect for him, was able to come in and do that role, and do it in his own way, but also honoring Andre. That’s a very difficult assignment, just on so many levels and he handled it with extraordinary grace and navigated that in a way that comforted us. It was hard.”
In addition to Esposito, The Residence features a large and diverse ensemble that includes Randall Park, Edwina Findley, Molly Griggs, Jason Lee, Ken Marino, Al Mitchell, Dan Perrault, Bronson Pinchot, Julieth Restrepo, Mel Rodriguez, Susan Kelechi Watson, Isiah Whitlock Jr., Mary Wiseman, and many, many more. Audiences will get to know this eclectic cast of characters really well as they work with Aduba’s Detective Cordelia Cupp to establish the identity of the killer in the unpredictable whodunit that begins when a murder takes place during a disastrous state dinner.
