Netflix’s True-Crime Belle Gibson Series ‘Apple Cider Vinegar’ Drops First Trailer, Sets Release Date

Netflix unveiled the first trailer and release date for the eagerly awaited Australian true-crime series titled “Apple Cider Vinegar“. This gripping show recounts the astonishing rise and fall of Belle Gibson, a single mother from Australia who built an empire centered on wellness by persuading people she had brain cancer and was healing herself through a natural lifestyle. As Netflix’s official tagline states, “It would be incredibly inspiring… if it were all true.

The initial trailer for the six-part miniseries unveils that Apple Cider Vinegar will be globally available on Netflix starting from February 6.

The debut trailer for a six-part miniseries titled Apple Cider Vinegar indicates it will premiere globally on Netflix on February 6.

Toward the end of last year, Netflix presented some initial images and a short promotional video starring Kaitlyn Dever (known for “Booksmart,” “Dopesick,” and “Unbelievable”). These previews showcased Dever in various stages as she transforms from an unassuming aspirant to a globally scandalized swindler. The trailer later disclosed that the American actress collaborated with a dialect coach to flawlessly portray an Australian accent, which is crucial for her captivating and irritably charming portrayal of Gibson.

As a dedicated gamer, I’m excited to share that “Apple Cider Vinegar” is a captivating series penned by the brilliant Samantha Strauss (author of “Nine Perfect Strangers” and “The End”). She collaborated with rising stars Anya Beyersdorf and Angela Betzien to bring this show to life. Interestingly, the storyline was loosely based on the real-life events chronicled in the non-fiction book “The Woman Who Fooled the World,” written by Beau Donelly and Nick Toscano, the investigative journalists who unraveled the truth behind Gibson’s deception.

However, Strauss’ interpretation of the narrative is marketed as more than just a conventional rise and fall account. At its core, Apple Crizer Vinegar delves into the intertwined journeys of four women concerning wellness, the burgeoning influence of social media personalities, and their impact on health trends. With sharp humor and surprising compassion, the series critiques the overconfidence of the traditional healthcare system as well as the assumptions and unfulfilled pledges within the wellness sector. Simultaneously, its lively visuals and retro pop soundtrack offer a nostalgic journey through the early 2000s, without avoiding how social media’s rapid adoption during that era affected our understanding of collective reality.

Tilda Cobham-Hervey, from the film “I Am Woman,” portrays Lucy, a cancer patient who finds solace and inspiration in the positive vibes of Belle’s Instagram account. Alycia Debnam-Carey, known for her role in “Fear the Walking Dead,” plays Milla Blake, a young woman diagnosed with a serious form of sarcoma. She decides to challenge Belle’s wellness platform by launching her own, convinced that her recovery can be achieved through coffee enemas and a juice-rich diet. Aisha Dee, starring in “The Bold Type,” plays Milla’s friend who first sees Belle as an ally at an event. However, their friendship evolves into a more critical relationship, filled with suspicion as they both pursue their respective wellness platforms.

In this series, our aim has been to illustrate that these topics aren’t purely good or bad – we wanted them to exist within the realm of ambiguity. We strive to depict the experiences of a young woman grappling with the most significant issues, life and death, while also finding humor in even the toughest situations. (Said Strauss to The Hollywood Reporter last November at Netflix’s new Australian headquarters in Sydney.)

As a gamer, I’m excited to share that “Apple Cider Vinegar” is a production helmed by Jeffrey Walker, who has previously directed shows like “The Clearing,” “The Artful Dodger,” and “Modern Family.” The star-studded cast includes familiar faces such as Ashley Zukerman from “Succession,” Mark Coles Smith from “Mystery Road: Origin,” Susie Porter from “Irreverent,” Matt Nable from “Transfusion,” Phoenix Raei from “The Night Agent,” Chai Hansen from “Night Sky,” Richard Davies from “Offspring,” Kieran Darcy-Smith from “Mr. Inbetween,” Catherine McClements from “Total Control,” and the talented Essie Davis from “Game of Thrones.

Executive producers for the project are Liz Watts, Helen Gregory, Emile Sherman, and Iain Canning from See-Saw Films, along with Samantha Strauss, Louise Gough, and Dever of Picking Scabs. Yvonne Collins serves as producer.

The entire limited series was filmed on-site in Melbourne, Australia, thanks to assistance from VicScreen via their Victorian Production Fund. Later stages of editing were carried out in New South Wales, receiving help from Screen NSW and their PDV Fund.
