As a gamer with an affinity for true crime shows and a deep-rooted interest in the Amanda Knox case, I find myself torn between the intrigue of this upcoming series and the sensitivity surrounding its filming in Perugia. While I understand the desire to honor Meredith Kercher’s memory, as a storyteller at heart, I can’t help but appreciate the opportunity for another perspective on this captivating tale.
True crime dramas, both fictionalized and documentary-style, have gained significant popularity. Some high-quality ones are also scheduled for 2024 television. Another scripted series within this genre is currently being developed, focusing on the Amanda Knox case – a woman who was acquitted of murdering her roommate, Meredith Kercher. Recently, filming for this streaming show has been taking place in Perugia, the city where Kercher was murdered. However, it appears that some residents aren’t happy about the production.
Filming for the series, tentatively named “Blue Moon,” has shifted to Perugia, Italy last week, causing unrest among locals who feel it disrespects Meredith Kercher’s memory. Residents have been seen carrying banners saying “Respect for Meredith.” As of now, neither Hulu nor Amanda Knox (an Executive Producer on the show) have issued a statement regarding this issue.
Indeed, the statement originated from Vittoria Ferdinandi, who serves as the mayor of the previously mentioned Italian city. In a letter penned to the citizens and subsequently published in local newspapers, Mayor Ferdinandi issued an apology for approving the filming of the show within their town. Additionally, she clarified her motivation behind making that decision by providing an explanation.
Instead of filming five scenes in Perugia, we opted to shoot them in any other town within our region if permission had not been granted. We felt that shooting here would give us a higher level of assurance and control since, upon request, we could personally oversee and approve each scene.
Born in Seattle, Amanda Knox (aged 20 at the time) was initially given a 26-year prison sentence by an Italian court in 2009 for her alleged involvement in the murder of British exchange student Miranda Kercher. At that time, Raffaele Sollecito, Knox’s boyfriend, also faced charges related to the murder and received a 25-year sentence. However, Rudy Guede was later convicted of sexually assaulting and murdering Kercher. In 2015, both Knox and Sollecito were cleared of any wrongdoing by the court.

The upcoming Hulu limited series, scheduled for eight episodes, features Grace Van Patten as Ms. Knox and Giuseppe De Domenico as Mr. Sollecito. Previously, the tale of this woman has been dramatized on various platforms. For instance, in 2011, Lifetime aired Amanda Knox: Murder in Italy, which later intended to update its film post-acquittals. The drama film, The Face of an Angel, directed by Michael Winterbottom and released in 2014, steered clear of the murder details and focused more on the individuals involved. Additionally, it’s rumored that the plot of Matt Damon’s 2021 drama Stillwater bears resemblance to Knox’s story, though she expressed disagreement with this portrayal.
According to Variety’s report, it appears that the streaming show won’t face any delays due to the backlash, and it’s uncertain how long filming will continue. However, considering this, there’s a possibility that the program could air towards the end of 2025.
People who are eagerly waiting for the Amanda Knox series to premiere should consider subscribing to Hulu, as it allows them to stream the show when it becomes available.
