As “Thunderbolts” debuts in cinemas and “Avengers: Doomsday” looms ahead, Marvel Studios is generating excitement about the fresh Avengers characters set to join the Marvel Cinematic Universe in the near future.
On May 2nd, the movie “Thunderbolts” was officially released, marking its entry as the concluding film of Marvel Cinematic Universe’s Phase 5. Actress Florence Pugh portrays Yelena Belova in this film, a character fans last saw her play in 2021’s “Hawkeye”. Notable stars such as Sebastian Stan (as Bucky Barnes) and Julia Louis-Dreyfus are also part of the ensemble cast.
Approximately one year after the premiere of “Thunderbolts”, the movie “Avengers: Doomsday” is set to be released in May 2026. This film will represent the fifth Avengers movie within the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). Production is already underway, and Marvel Studios recently unveiled an impressive lineup of stars during a marathon livestream, only weeks before “Thunderbolts” made its debut.
6 Official New Avengers Confirmed For Avengers: Doomsday
The rest of this article contains spoilers for Thunderbolts*.
In the final and additional scenes after the credits in the film “Thunderbolts,” it is made clear that the main group of characters will hereafter be recognized as the New Avengers.
One of the two Avengers squads set to appear in the film will be established, and the post-credits sequence (picking up from the conclusion of “Captain America: Brave New World”) will indicate that Sam Wilson is assembling his own team of Avengers as well.
The officially recognized team known as the “New Avengers,” which is supported by the government, currently has six active members, but it appears that one of them is temporarily incapacitated at this point in time.
Yelena Belova (Florence Pugh)
Following her starring role in Thunderbolts, it appears that Yelena is assuming command of the New Avengers, or possibly co-leading with Bucky Barnes, as suggested by the post-credit scene of the latest film.
Given that the film explores Yelena’s joy when part of a team, even if it’s less than ideal, there’s a possibility she might overcome her current depression. If her spirit were to regain its luster, it would undoubtedly be in such an environment where she thrives best.
Bucky Barnes (Sebastian Stan)
While it’s appealing to assert that Bucky Barnes is the sole New Avenger who was an official member of the previous Avengers team, it’s important to note that in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), his status as a formal Avenger remains somewhat unclear. He has indeed fought alongside them, but whether he was technically ever officially part of the team or just an ally hasn’t been explicitly clarified yet.
Nevertheless, Bucky’s sage advice is indispensable to the fresh team, given that no other New Avenger has had a connection to teams like the Avengers in the same way Bucky did.
Not only is he apparently the connection between Sam Wilson’s Avengers and the New Avengers, but despite their disagreements over who the genuine Avengers are, it’s difficult for them to remain angry with one another for extended periods.
Red Guardian / Alexei Shostakov (David Harbour)
In a simplified manner, we can say: Red Guardina, at present, appears to be the most eager new member of the Avengers group. Throughout the film, he had been attempting to persuade them to form a team, so it’s only natural that he is overjoyed when they finally do — and not just any team, but the New Avengers.
Despite not openly acknowledging it, Alexei has long wrestled with feelings of being undervalued as a superhero, and harbored a deep desire for acceptance that many outcasts can empathize with. It’s intriguing to contemplate where his journey takes him now that he publicly secured the team he yearned for so dearly.
Ghost / Ava Starr (Hannah John-Kamen)
In her debut since “Ant-Man and The Wasp,” Ghost transformed from a seemingly one-time villain with credible reasons into a member (or at least, a version) of Earth’s strongest heroes. This rapid transformation from zero to hero is impressive on its own, but becomes even more so when considering that she will feature in “Avengers: Doomsday.
It’s important to note that she was never unimportant. In fact, her role became crucial as seen in the Ant-Man and The Wasp post-credit scene. She is the reason Scott Lang survived Thanos’ snap and played a key part in figuring out time travel to bring everyone back. He was in the Quantum Realm for the purpose of keeping Ghost alive, which ultimately saved half of the universe. Now, she gets to join forces with the Avengers in combat.
U.S. Agent / John Walker (Wyatt Russell)
In an impressively well-crafted manner, Thunderbolts skillfully portrayed the female characters who interact with John Walker in such a way that they have valid reasons to dislike him, yet they also empathize with his struggles and understand his need for a support network.
Indeed, it’s intriguing to anticipate the development of U.S. Agent, considering the parallels between the New Avengers team and his potential transition into the role previously held by Captain America in “The Falcon and the Winter Soldier.
The U.S. Agent might not realize or be concerned about the pain he inflicts on others, but it doesn’t automatically mean his motives are evil. His character development in ‘Avengers: Doomsday’ and beyond could prove even more intriguing (regardless of whether he undergoes a change for the better).
Sentry* / Void* / Robert Reynolds (Lewis Pullman)
Drawing inspiration from the Thunderbolts’ playbook, the asterisks attached to Robert Reynolds’ two characters serve a purposeful role. The post-credit scene hints at his deliberate refrain from wielding his powers as the Sentry, to prevent the reoccurrence of the Void and sparing everyone from being ensnared in their darkest memories and secrets.
In other words, having Bob show up in the post-credit scene as if he’s just done dishes and not utilizing Sentry’s powers throughout an Avengers movie can seem plausible. However, it’s tough to accept that he would abstain from using his powers for the entire film. This setup does imply a potential risk of Bob transforming back into the Void, as indicated by the asterisks.
