As a seasoned film enthusiast with a penchant for unconventional stories and complex characters, I eagerly await the release of A24’s upcoming masterpiece, Babygirl. The second trailer has only heightened my anticipation, especially after hearing about the mesmerizing performance by the inimitable Nicole Kidman as Romy. Her portrayal, hailed by numerous critics as one of her best, promises to be a tour de force that might just earn her an Oscar nod for Best Actress.
24 Studios unveiled a passionate second preview for their upcoming movie titled “Babygirl“, featuring Academy Award-winning actress Nicole Kidman portraying Romy, a CEO engaged in a steamy romance with her younger employee Samuel, played by Harris Dickinson from the film “The Iron Claw“. The movie is helmed by director Halina Reijn, who collaborated with the studio for the 2022 comedy-thriller “Bodies Bodies Bodies“. Alongside them in “Babygirl” is Antonio Banderas. This intriguing drama will be released in cinemas on Christmas Day.
Many critics have praised Nicole Kidman’s performance as exceptional and suggested it could be nominated for an Oscar in the Best Actress category, according to Indiewire. Director Reijn compared watching Kidman act to observing an “exorcism.” Kidman herself shared her thoughts on making the film Babygirl, stating:
As an avid admirer, I found myself captivated by its exploration of longings, introspective musings, hidden truths, matrimonial complexities, honesty, authority, and the nuanced discourse surrounding intimacy. The unique perspective from which it was narrated – through a woman’s eyes – made it all the more intriguing. I was eagerly anticipating delving into this material, handing over my reading experience to a female storyteller. It was an intensely thought-provoking and liberating journey to expose and discuss these personal topics.
On how audiences will interpret Babygirl, Kidman said:
Each individual’s perspective when viewing the film varies greatly… If we were to survey everyone here, their responses to Romy and her actions would be vastly different. For me, this movie serves as a platform to explore the complexities of human nature. Specifically, I am interested in exploring the portrayal of women on screen, delving into what it means to be human in all its aspects, and navigating the intricate labyrinth that is humanity.
Kidman Had To “Abandon Everything” for ‘Babygirl’
Reijn has experience with psychosexual stories featuring complex female characters. She started her directing journey in 2019 with “Instinct“, a movie about a psychologist who develops feelings for a sex offender she’s counseling in prison. Aside from being a director, she is also a skilled actress and spent many years working in the European film and television industry before transitioning to filmmaking.
Through this experience, Reijn developed a knack for being a “director who works well with actors,” if you will. In a conversation with Complex post the premiere of Bodies Bodies Bodies, Reijn elaborated on the distinctions between acting and directing, and how her background as an actress shaped her unique directorial approach.
As a performer, I’ve found myself in situations where directors have told me to “go with whatever feels right,” which leaves me feeling uncomfortably unguarded. However, striking a balance between being well-prepared and having the creative freedom to explore my own ideas is what truly empowers an actor. These boundaries provide a foundation upon which we can improvise, discovering our unique flow that often unearths impulses I, as a director, might never conceive.
Kidman appreciated this commitment to actor safety, telling People:
“There’s an element of taking a leap into the unknown, where you decide to leave behind everything familiar and venture forth with trusted companions, delving into a pre-established genre. Our aim is not only to traverse established territories but also to forge new paths, particularly with a woman leading the charge.
Babygirl
hits theaters on December 25.
