New Details About MCU's Scrapped Scarlet Witch Plans Have Fans Feeling 'Sick'

As a seasoned movie critic with a penchant for uncovering hidden gems and a keen eye for the missteps of the big studios, I must say that the revelation of Beau DeMayo’s abandoned plans for Scarlet Witch in “Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness” has left me both fascinated and disheartened. Fascinated, because it offers a tantalizing glimpse into what could have been; disheartened, because we all know that Hollywood’s road to production is paved with good intentions that often never see the light of day.

Previously in charge of the ‘X-Men ’97’ series, screenwriter Beau DeMayo recently sparked excitement among Marvel fans by disclosing the initial ideas for Wanda Maximoff’s character arc in the ‘Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness’. The portrayal of Scarlet Witch in the 2022 film has been a topic of ongoing debate, with many expressing their thoughts online about whether it was her final appearance or not. Now, DeMayo has added fuel to the fire by confirming the original storyline for the movie.

At present, DeMayo finds himself embroiled in controversy after his dismissal from the X-Men ’97 series by Disney following an internal probe that uncovered severe findings. Despite promising to share his perspective later on, he is currently disclosing information about Marvel’s shelved movie projects like the Doctor Strange sequel and Blade instead. In response to internet speculation regarding Scarlet Witch’s part in Scott Derrickson’s initial Multiverse of Madness film, DeMayo commented:

“Correct. OG drafts did [Scarlet Witch] justice. Wanda was with Strange recovering after Westview, feeling bad about what she did. She helps him, Wong and [America] Chavez (who she tutors) beat Nightmare across multiverse, where she also sees her variants happy with her kids. Still, Wanda resists and she — not Chavez — helps Strange save the day against Nightmare, who turns out to be a Darkhold-corrupted Strange variant. Also, she used her experiences in WandaVision to warn Chavez about abusing her power.”

In the heat of triumph, I found myself irresistibly drawn to seek a realm where I could be reunited with my cherished children. Overwhelmed by emotions, I couldn’t help but tearfully part ways from Strange, leading me to inadvertently behead Wong in an attempt to halt my escape into the multiverse. This moment marked the suspenseful end of the movie. In a familiar comic book twist, guilt consumed me as I repeatedly apologized to Strange while disappearing, leaving him with his dearly departed friend’s remains.

Fans Are Not Happy Over Scarlet Witch’s Lost Story

In my perspective, the Marvel Cinematic Universe brims with hypothetical turning points, given the ever-shifting plans surrounding this franchise. Factors such as creative disputes, actors’ departures due to personal matters, and unexpected changes in leadership (like Bob Chapek staying at Disney) or directors abandoning key projects could have significantly altered the narrative we’re currently experiencing. Each of these factors creates an intriguing “what if” scenario for the MCU storyline.

For supporters of Scarlet Witch, the concept of what could have been is another reason for critics of Olsen’s character to criticize Marvel Studios for mishandling her and the franchise. Silly1E reacted to DeMayo’s post with, “‘I feel nauseous. This is the movie we and Scarlet Witch deserved instead of a movie that ignored WandaVision.’” Nina7Infinity followed up with, “‘They ended up with a disaster anyway because Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness was awful. Too predictable. The other story sounded better.’” clawdwolf captured the sentiment of many when he said, “‘Guys, it’s so disappointing…someone take me to the dimension where this is what was made.’

It’s worth noting that not everyone agreed with the alternate version of “Multiverse of Madness”. @X_pacaud backed the final cut, stating, “I enjoy this, but I also like what was made. Not every discarded plot is inherently superior. ‘Wandavision’ foreshadowed that the Darkhold would be corrupting, and the events in MoM followed through on that.” @GladionZ went a step further, saying, “The movie itself is really good, the suggested version would have been terrible, laugh out loud.

Discussing scrapped movie plans within popular franchises can ignite strong opinions among fans, and this has happened yet again. Lately, numerous screenwriters and directors have disclosed details about their unrealized projects, but DeMayo likely wouldn’t have been as eager to speak up if he were still part of the franchise.

The released version of “Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness” is now available for streaming on Disney+.
