New Details Revealed About Elder Scrolls Online Dev’s Rumored Canceled Game

It has been revealed that one of the games rumored to be shelved in Microsoft’s recent round of cuts was an MMO being developed by ZeniMax Online Studios, the team behind The Elder Scrolls Online. This project, known internally as “Blackbird,” is said to have been under development.

As a gaming enthusiast, I’ve just come across some exciting news – Blackbird, a brand-new sci-fi adventure, has been in the works since 2018! It seems that ZeniMax Online Studios is crafting a unique game engine for it, which could be why we’ve had to wait so patiently. Can’t wait to see this space odyssey unfold!

According to the report, Blackbird’s pre-production phase was progressing smoothly, and the studio was actively increasing their efforts in anticipation of moving into full production. The report also mentioned that executives at Xbox gave their approval for the game to proceed to the next stage of development, with teams from The Elder Scrolls Online and other projects adjusting their focus to assist in this growth.

According to the report, the entire team involved in creating the game was impacted when the game was cancelled. Notably, over 400 developers from the studio based in Maryland were subsequently terminated.

Microsoft officially announced the cancellation of both Everwild by Rare and Perfect Dark by The Initiative. However, the company has not made any official statements regarding the rumored new game from ZeniMax. Xbox head Matt Booty did mention that “several” unannounced projects have been scrapped. On the same day the layoffs were announced, ZeniMax’s president Matt Firor revealed his departure from the company.

Microsoft is developing over 40 new video games, including upcoming releases like “Gears of War: E-Day” and “Fable,” which are scheduled for 2026. Additionally, there are whispers about the potential return of the popular series Halo to celebrate its 25th anniversary.
