New Exhibit Explores Jacob Rosenberg’s Impact on Skateboarding and Hip-Hop

As a child of the ’80s and ’90s, I’ve lived through the golden era of skateboarding and streetwear, witnessing the transformation from a marginalized subculture to a global phenomenon. Jacob Rosenberg has been a guiding light in this journey, capturing the raw energy and creativity that defined this era.

Skateboarding was once shunned by the media and many brands that now support its culture, initially considering it an outsider sport for misfits. However, from the 1980s to around the turn of the millennium, influential figures in hip hop and skate scenes paved a new path in what would later be known as streetwear, laying the foundation for today’s cultural trends. Jacob Rosenberg, an American director, designer, and photographer, played a crucial role in this evolution, helping to establish the visual identity that has become iconic for some of skateboarding’s most revered brands and personalities.

Since its inception in 2006, HVW8 gallery in Los Angeles has been a cornerstone of the skate community. Starting this month, it will display pieces from Rosenberg’s archives, such as screenshots, scans of 16mm films, reproduced online and print articles, and an abundance of previously unseen memorabilia. This exhibition delves into the origins of fame, featuring influential figures like Mike Carroll, Del the Funky Homosapien, Souls of Mischief, De La Soul, Chuck D, among others. It encapsulates the raw energy that has permeated numerous creative fields ever since.

The show, titled PLAN B TO HIERO, opening at HVW8 on November 22 and running until January 20, 2025, will have two companion books. These books will provide documentation of the exhibition. One of these books is a collector’s edition, made of linen and limited to only 143 signed copies. This exclusive version can be purchased for $200 USD online or at the gallery.
