New-gen Red Dead Redemption 2 ‘leak’ leaves players sceptical

As a seasoned gamer with over two decades of gaming under my belt, I’ve seen more than a few false dawns and dashed hopes. But, the tantalizing prospect of a new-gen Red Dead Redemption 2 has me hooked like a fish on the line.

Is it possible that Rockstar Games is preparing to release a new-generation version of Red Dead Redemption 2? It’s been approximately six years since Arthur Morgan embarked on his critically successful cowboy adventure, yet the game has not yet been optimized for PS5 and Xbox Series. Consequently, there have been numerous requests for an upgrade to a new-generation port.

Previously this year, Rockstar released their first update for Red Dead Redemption 2 in almost two years, but it left fans puzzled as to why the long-awaited 60fps enhancement wasn’t included. Despite court documents hinting at a new generation version of Red Dead Redemption 2, we’re still in anticipation.

Across Reddit, a potential trailer for the next-gen version of Red Dead Redemption 2 has sparked excitement. This video functions as a preview of the upcoming game, concluding with a hint that it’s set to launch on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series in March 2025.

Despite our enthusiasm for the next-gen Red Dead Redemption 2, there’s skepticism about its authenticity. In today’s AI-dominated world, it seems almost too simple to fabricate something like this. Surprisingly, the rumor originated from a Reddit post that didn’t gain much attention until it was spread on X.

The original poster allegedly works at Rockstar Games, though this has often been disputed. If there’s any basis to the speculations, they suggest that Rockstar has temporarily halted other projects, such as Bully, to concentrate solely on Grand Theft Auto 6, ensuring it gets maximum marketing exposure. Similarly, whispers about a potential return to Bully hint at Rockstar possibly focusing all its resources on GTA currently.

It appears that some people are speculating that if the leaked trailer was genuine, Take-Two Interactive and Rockstar would have taken down the video by now due to copyright issues. The fact that it remains online may indicate that this could be just another Reddit user trying to gain attention with fake news, although others believe that Rockstar might be building up to a significant announcement.

Some individuals were overly optimistic, with one hopeful player remarking, “If this isn’t genuine, someone must have painstakingly created an orchestral remix of ‘That’s The Way It Is’, which would be a lot of effort to fake.” Another quipped, “This has to be false because good things don’t happen to us,” and another exclaimed, “Dude, please let this be true. I’ve had enough, boss 🥺.”

It’s important to remember we still haven’t got the long-mooted Red Dead Redemption PC port that would give the 2010 adventure a new lease of life, so we can’t see a new-gen RDR2 coming before that. The likes of Digital Foundry have given us a tantalising tease of what a new-gen Red Dead Redemption 2 could look like on console, but for now, we’re left out in the desert without a horse to take us back to town.
