New IMAX Milestones Achieved By Alien: Romulus & Deadpool & Wolverine

As a film enthusiast with over three decades of moviegoing under my belt, I can confidently say that 2024 has been an exceptional year for IMAX screens, and it’s not just the popcorn talking! The box office successes of Alien: Romulus and Deadpool & Wolverine have truly outshone the competition.

This quarter has been phenomenal for IMAX, primarily due to the success of “Alien: Romulus” and “Deadpool & Wolverine” at the box office. Notably, both movies have set significant milestones for IMAX lately. However, it’s “Alien: Romulus” that can boast about being a standout in the horror genre on the large-format screens.

By the Set Date, “Alien: Romulus” has become the top-earning horror movie of all time in global IMAX revenues, raking in approximately $40 million. Initially planned for streaming on Hulu, the film managed this impressive figure despite a relatively modest budget of $80 million. To date, it has grossed an astounding $101.8 million domestically and a staggering $331.5 million worldwide. For your reference, it has surpassed the earnings of its predecessor, “Alien: Covenant,” which garnered $74.3 million domestically and $240.9 million globally. It’s worth noting that “Prometheus” still holds the record for the highest-grossing “Alien” film worldwide, with a total of $403.4 million at the global box office.

The duo of Deadpool & Wolverine has equally excelled in IMAX presentations. In 2024, their sole MCU film release earned a staggering $84 million globally through IMAX screenings, placing it as the fifth highest-grossing Marvel title in this format worldwide. This year, Deadpool & Wolverine have proven to be an unstoppable force at the box office, raking in $622.5 million domestically and $1.3 billion globally. What’s even more remarkable is that the movie has consistently ranked among the top five earners since its release eight weeks ago, most recently taking third place with earnings of $5.2 million, just behind Speak No Evil and the second weekend of Beetlejuice Beetlejuice.

This year has been exceptional for IMAX, as the global box office for Dune: Part Two on their giant screens exceeded $100 million. This substantial income boosted the film’s overall worldwide earnings of $711.8 million. Over time, IMAX has consistently demonstrated its value as a premier movie-watching format, particularly when a film is designed specifically for it. The visual and sensory experience offered by IMAX is unparalleled, compelling viewers to spend more to enjoy movies at their finest audiovisual quality.

Thanks to the success of “Alien: Romulus” and “Deadpool & Wolverine”, IMAX experienced one of its most profitable third quarters at the global box office, earning approximately $225 million worldwide in the format. This trend is expected to continue as they have more groundbreaking releases lined up, such as “Joker: Folie à Deux” and “Venom: The Last Dance” this October, followed by “Gladiator II”, “Wicked”, “Moana 2”, “Mufasa: The Lion King”, and “Sonic the Hedgehog 3” towards the end of November and December.
