During SXSW London on Thursday, the highly anticipated thriller series “All Her Fault,” starring Sarah Snook, along with Lena Dunham‘s romantic comedy show “Too Much,” and a television adaptation of Alfred Hitchcock’s classic “The Birds” were all highlighted.
At SXSW London’s inaugural event, they garnered attention as global hit series produced by different labels within NBCUniversal shone brightly on the main stage.
Discussion Topic: What Makes Great TV? – This was the subject of a lively conversation involving Surian Fletcher-Jones, head of drama at Working Title Television, Sue Gibbs, head of development at Heyday Television (a joint venture between producer David Heyman and NBCUniversal International Studios), Noemi Spanos, creative director at Carnival Films, and moderated by Beatrice Springborn, president of Universal International Studios and Universal Content Productions (UCP).
In response to being asked about the impact of cost reductions, budget cuts, and layoffs in the TV industry on their jobs, the executives offered their perspectives, highlighting both the difficulties they face as well as potential advantages.
Gibbs suggested we’re evolving our approach,” he said. “Traditionally, as a company, we’ve specialized in Intellectual Property (IP), and David is well-known for this with projects like Harry Potter and Paddington. So, I believe we’ll continue to seek IP. However, we might be focusing less on the latest books hitting the market because it’s incredibly competitive and costly. Instead, we’re exploring classic literature, old TV shows, articles, and more. Thus, our evolution seems to be in this direction.
Gibbs further discussed that Heyday has traditionally worked by having scripts written and then marketing them to potential buyers. However, she stated that they are now aiming to be more agile in their approach. Essentially, instead of writing a script first, they might go straight to pitching an idea to speed up the process. Additionally, they’re trying to establish projects directly with buyers rather than approaching multiple buyers simultaneously at once. This new strategy is not only financially beneficial but also emotionally motivating. If a buyer is emotionally connected to the project from the beginning, they may be more willing to assist in making it successful.
Regarding the shows they’re eagerly anticipating, Spanos highlighted the psychological thriller “All Her Fault” on Peacock. She described it as follows: “In the story, Sarah Snook’s character goes to pick up a child from a play date, but the woman who opens the door doesn’t recognize her and the child seems unfamiliar with her. This sets off the thriller’s narrative engine, and it eventually evolves into a larger mystery similar to ‘Big Little Lies’, involving the secrets and lies between various families and relationships.
Spanos observed: “Upon initial read and view, I appreciated the underlying feminist theme running throughout. Given the title All Her Fault, it’s clear that the story explores how a mother is treated unfairly compared to a father in similar situations, by the police, society, and essentially everyone.
Regarding the upcoming series inspired by Daphne du Maurier’s novella “The Birds”, Spanos explained: “We’re not remaking the classic Hitchcock film, but rather going back to its roots. The core theme is about when nature becomes your enemy. Given the context of climate change, this topic couldn’t be more relevant today. We’ve recently brought on board an American showrunner with a strong background in genre storytelling, but didn’t disclose their name.
As a gaming enthusiast, let me tell you about Too Much, which beautifully delves into the charming contrasts between the U.S. and the U.K. in a heartwarming manner.
On Wednesday, the SXSW London event showcased notable figures such as Idris Elba, Björn Ulvaeus from ABBA, and Letitia Wright, along with several others.
From June 7, SXSW London offers a variety of panel discussions, film screenings, live music events, and more. Interestingly, Penske Media, the parent company of The Hollywood Reporter, holds a significant share in SXSW.
