In Marvel movies, love stories sometimes take a backseat, but over the years, the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) has developed its fair share of romantic pairs, and none have been as adored as Tony Stark, portrayed by Robert Downey Jr., and Pepper Potts, played by Gwyneth Paltrow. This couple first appeared in 2008’s Iron Man, with Pepper serving as Tony’s personal assistant at Stark Industries. Their relationship flourished across the trilogy of Iron Man films and the Avengers series, culminating in their marriage and the birth of their daughter, Morgan, in Avengers: Endgame. Although Tony and Pepper are considered the MCU‘s first power couple, a new romance within the MCU is quickly gaining popularity as a strong contender for top spot.
In July 25th, Marvel’s initial film for Phase 6, titled “The Fantastic Four: First Steps“, will be launched. The Fantastic Four is a family from Marvel comics, and at the core of this family lies its central couple, Reed Richards (played by Pedro Pascal) and Sue Storm (Vanessa Kirby). Unlike some previous adaptations of the Fantastic Four where Sue and Reed’s romance developed gradually, much like Tony Stark and Pepper Potts’ relationship, “The Fantastic Four: First Steps” starts with Sue and Reed already married and well-settled as a couple.
The upcoming movie titled “The Fantastic Four: First Steps” hasn’t hit the screens yet, however, the sneak peeks into Sue and Reed’s relationship suggest they might have the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s most captivating love story.
Why Reed Richards and Sue Storm Are A Better MCU Couple Than Tony and Pepper
Although Tony Stark and Pepper Potts’ romance in the Marvel Cinematic Universe will forever be cherished, their journey together concluded in Avengers: Endgame. As a new chapter begins, the dynamic duo of Sue Storm and Reed Richards seems poised to become the MCU’s next iconic couple.
Compared to Tony and Pepper’s romance, which evolved gradually over several films, Sue and Reed’s relationship is already advanced due to their upcoming film, “The Fantastic Four: First Steps.” While the MCU only introduced a child into Tony and Pepper’s relationship in “Avengers: Endgame,” Sue and Reed will have a newborn, Franklin Richards, from the start. This early establishment allows for more growth potential for the couple within future MCU productions, as they can face uncharted challenges that haven’t been depicted on-screen in Marvel Studios projects so far.
Compared to Reed and Sue’s relationship, the on-screen development of Tony Stark and Pepper Potts’ relationship takes a backseat in the Iron Man movies due to Tony’s superhero responsibilities. Although Gwyneth Paltrow appears in Avengers films and Spider-Man: Homecoming, her role is often minimized, leading to significant aspects of their relationship being explored off-screen.
It appears that The Fantastic Four: First Steps is focusing more on Sue and Reed’s romantic relationship, making it a significant aspect of the storyline rather than a secondary one. Given that they share superpowers and are teammates in the same superhero group, their partnership extends beyond just work. In comparison, the Marvel Cinematic Universe attempted something similar with Tony Stark and Pepper Potts through the Rescue Suit in Avengers: Endgame, but this came late in their relationship and was more of a last resort. For the majority of their storyline, Tony kept Pepper out of action for her safety, while Reed and Sue are true superhero partners, relying on each other’s abilities.
Together, Sue and Reed acquire their extraordinary abilities at the same time and subsequently unite to form the Fantastic Four. They dedicate every day to safeguarding the world as a team, working hand-in-hand. Known as Marvel’s “original family,” the Fantastic Four have earned
As a dedicated Marvel fan, I can’t help but feel excited about the prospect of Reed Richards and Sue Storm stepping into the limelight in the MCU. While Tony Stark and Pepper Potts have left an indelible mark on our hearts, Reed and Sue are poised to continue the legacy of Marvel’s most captivating relationships. However, their chemistry and potential power could potentially eclipse the brilliance of the original power couple.
