As a longtime fan of the Olympics and someone who has fond memories of watching Opening Ceremonies with my family growing up, I’m thrilled to see that Peacock is offering every sport live for its premium subscribers this year. While NBC will be airing many sports on traditional TV, having the ability to watch any Olympic event at any time is a game-changer for me. Plus, the Opening Ceremonies are always a spectacle worth witnessing, and I can’t wait to see how the host country South Korea showcases its culture and traditions.
As someone who’s always on the lookout for the latest and greatest content to watch on streaming platforms, I can tell you that July may be nearing its end, but the world of streaming never seems to take a break. It feels like there’s a constant influx of new shows, movies, and documentaries being added every single week.
As a busy working mom with two young kids, I can hardly wait for this week! Between juggling my career and family life, finding time to unwind and enjoy some entertainment has become a luxury. But thankfully, there’s no shortage of new content coming our way. From fresh streaming series that promise to keep me on the edge of my seat, to movies based on classic stories that bring back nostalgic memories, I feel like I’ll have plenty to look forward to. And for those days when I need a break from it all, there’s always the beginning of one of the biggest sporting events in the world to look forward to. The thrill of competition and the excitement of watching my favorite teams battle it out is something that never gets old. So here’s to another week filled with new experiences, old favorites, and a little bit of relaxation!
New TV
Time Bandits (Apple TV+)
Terry Gilliam’s 1981 film “Time Bandits” is a beloved cult classic. Familiar to anyone who grew up with the tale of a boy sucked into a band of time-jumping robbers, this movie is now accessible to a modern audience through an Apple TV+ subscription.
Taika Waititi and Jermaine Clement collaborated on creating and acted in this contemporary adaptation of the quirky and enchanting tale. Let’s cross our fingers that the fresh take on “Time Bandits” is just as entertaining, whimsical, and bizarre as its predecessor.
Time Bandits premieres July 24 on Apple TV+
Dirty Pop: The Boy Band Scam (Netflix)
During the 1990s, Lou Pearlman gained recognition for his role in creating some of the decade’s most successful boy bands. However, it was later uncovered that Pearlman’s claims to fame were not entirely truthful. The book “Dirty Pop” delves into Pearlman’s past and alleges how he manipulated and exploited the artists under his management.
Fans of these bands, all having a Netflix subscription, are likely intrigued by the behind-the-scenes stories. This could offer them a fresh perspective on their beloved boy bands.
Dirty Pop: The Boy Band Scam premieres July 24 on Netflix.
The Decameron (Netflix)
The Decameron is either a book you’ve only heard of or one you were forced to read in English class. If the actual tome was as funny as the new Netflix series looks, it probably would have been a more enjoyable read.
Netflix’s “The Decameron” draws inspiration from Boccaccio’s framework yet tells an independent story. A band of Italian nobles hole up in a villa during the Black Death outbreak. Featuring Tony Hale from “Veep” and Amar Chadha-Patel known for his work in “Willow,” this production promises plenty of humor.
The Decameron premieres July 25 On Netflix.
Summer Olympics Opening Ceremonies (Peacock)
As a long-time sports enthusiast and someone who cherishes the excitement of the Olympic Games, I’m thrilled that this week marks the beginning of the Summer Olympics. And if you’re like me and have a Peacock subscription, especially the premium version, consider yourself in for an unforgettable experience.
If you’re not into watching all Olympic sports, the Opening Ceremonies are still a must-see. They’re filled with grandeur and spectacle, giving you a glimpse into how the hosting country intends to impress the global audience.
The Summer Olympics Opening Ceremonies premieres July 26 On Peacock.
Olympic Highlights With Kevin Hart and Kenan Thompson (Peacock)
If you enjoy watching the Olympics and can’t help but laugh out loud, then you should tune in to “Olympic Highlights with Kevin Hart and Kenan Thompson“. Imagine a blend of SportsCenter and comedy. These comedians will be sharing their amusing perspectives on the most exciting moments of the competitions during the Olympics. The show will air eight times throughout the entire Olympic Games.
Thompson and Hart collaborated on a 2023 reflection program, reminiscing about the year’s notable moments with shared amusement. The audience responded favorably, leading them to plan a similar project centered around the Olympics.
Olympic Highlights With Kevin Hart and Kenan Thompson Premiere July 26 On Peacock
New Movies
Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire (Netflix)
Enthusiasts of the initial Ghostbusters were so deeply engrossed in Ghostbusters: Afterlife that it sparked a spin-off of its own. In Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire, a fresh squad of Ghostbusters, comprised of Carrie Coon and Paul Rudd, explore a novel supernatural menace.
Although critics weren’t overly fond of “Frozen Empire,” it can be considered a comedic take on the “Ghostbusters” theme, and potentially more amusing than “Ghostbusters: Afterlife.” If you didn’t catch it in theaters, it’s still worth checking out.
Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire premieres July 22 on Netflix.
Bob Marley: One Love (Prime Video)
One Love with Kingsley Ben-Adir as Bob Marley
Bob Marley: One Love is available now On Prime Video
Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning, Part One (Prime Video)
Approximately one year following the big-screen debut of “Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One,” and just prior to the theatrical release of “Part Two,” the initial movie becomes available on Prime Video. For those who didn’t catch it in theaters but are eager to witness Tom Cruise’s exhilarating stunts, this is an excellent opportunity before the next installment hits theaters.
Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning, Part One Premieres July 25 On Prime Video.
The Man From U.N.C.L.E. (Netflix)
On occasion, streaming services allow you to revisit films that have been unfairly overlooked. It’s not uncommon for these seemingly forgotten movies to gain popularity as streaming hits. If you missed Guy Ritchie’s The Man From U.N.C.L.E. during its initial release, this week is your opportunity to make amends.
The Man From U.N.C.L.E. premieres July 27 on Netflix.
Next week marks the transition from July to August. This signifies the monthly onslaught of content changes on streaming platforms. Many TV shows and movies will be departing, but with that comes an abundance of fresh content for viewers to discover. We’ll help you navigate through the highlights to ensure you don’t miss out on the best new releases.
