As a child of the 80’s, I can vividly remember the vibrant, colorful world of Rainbow Brite that filled our television screens and toy aisles. The character was more than just a cartoon; she embodied peace, friendship, and love – values that resonated with me and countless others from that era. So, hearing about the revival of this beloved icon is nothing short of exhilarating!
This year marks the 40th birthday for the beloved character Rainbow Brite, and to commemorate this milestone, Crayola Studios and Hallmark have revealed plans to reintroduce her in a brand-new television series and movie. The same creative team behind popular franchises like Sonic the Hedgehog and Fast & Furious will be producing these projects. Rainbow Brite first graced our screens in 1984, but despite only airing for one season, her impact has endured through a subsequent film, numerous merchandise items, and lasting memories among those who cherish her as a symbol of peace, friendship, and love from their childhood.
Through their production company Original Film, Neal H. Moritz and Toby Ascher are managing the theatrical debut of Rainbow Brite. This dynamic duo has previously revitalized other classic franchises, like Sonic the Hedgehog, which earned $320 million at the box office in 2020 and has since led to two sequels, with the third one set for release this December. Although a writer, director, and release date for the Rainbow Brite project have yet to be announced, Moritz’s statement indicates their eagerness to get the project underway.
We’re thrilled to team up with Crayola Studios and Hallmark for the revival of Rainbow Brite, and we can hardly contain our enthusiasm as we prepare to introduce this fresh franchise to global viewers!
In the period between 1984 and 1986, Rainbow Brite aired, featuring a grand total of 13 episodes. The storyline revolved around Wisp, a young girl who found herself in a drab world governed by the King of Shadows. Along her adventure, she made friends with a sprite, discovered the Color Belt, rescued the seven Color Kids held captive by the villainous ruler, and was rechristened Rainbow Brite by the Sphere of Light. The series’ magical elements resonated deeply with many children, while its heartwarming themes provided a refreshing change for parents weary of watching endless battles between toy soldiers and transforming robots. Since then, there have been brief attempts to revive it, most notably in 2014 for a three-episode event; however, the franchise has been largely inactive over the past decade.
What Will the Rainbow Brite TV Series Be About?
In terms of television programming, Cake Entertainment is set to produce the upcoming “Rainbow Brite” series (release date yet to be determined). Notably, this company has a history of creating family-friendly content for children, such as “Angry Birds: Summer Madness” on Netflix. From the official synopsis, it seems that they won’t deviate significantly from the original concept of the show.
In a different setting, Rainbow Brite – a cherished companion, champion, role model, and artistic muse who infuses the cosmos with every hue of the rainbow – finds herself in a dismal, colorless realm on a quest to restore brightness, cheer, and joy.
The series is described as having a modern appeal, which may stir controversy among those criticizing what they label as “progressive Hollywood.” Essentially, these critics are concerned about LGBTQ+ themes and characters potentially influencing young minds, or supposedly making them more accepting of diverse sexual orientations. In simpler terms, they fear the series might “make kids gay.” Interestingly, given that Rainbow Brite is known for her bright colors and caring nature, these critics likely have issues with the new direction as well. However, for fans who have admired the spirited character in her primary hues of red, blue, and yellow for years, this development is certainly exciting news.
