As a lifelong comic book enthusiast and a devotee of Stan Lee’s extraordinary contributions to the world of superheroes, I am thrilled beyond words about the upcoming multimedia project, “The Excelsiors.
Decades following Stan Lee’s demise, the cinematic influence of this comics titan persists, with one of his previously unrealized comic book teams slated for a TV and movie adaptation. Known for co-creating fan favorites such as Spider-Man, Iron Man, Doctor Doom, Miles Morales, The Hulk, The Fantastic Four, and many others, Lee also left behind his famous exclamation “Excelsior!
According to The Wrap, the upcoming multimedia venture titled “The Excelsiors” is set to debut with an original graphic novel from indie comics publisher Legible Comics. Kartoon Studios is working on a new TV series and film for this project as well. Notably, Michael Uslan, who has been involved in the production of every Batman movie since Tim Burton’s 1989 blockbuster, is overseeing the entire project.
The Excelsiors, one of Stan Lee’s grand team-ups, is set to introduce ten fresh superheroes with cleverly punny names such as X-Otic, X-T, X-Change, X-Hale, X-Tricate, X-Isle, and X-Ecutioner. This project takes place in a world not too far from the future where super-corporations rule instead of governments, with The Excelsiors being employed by the enigmatic “Amaz-Ing Tech LLC.” Michael Ulsan assures that this new venture will pay tribute to the remarkable legacy of Stan Lee. He stated:
Stan frequently emphasized that the most thrilling superheroes would reach their peak when paired with equally captivating and intriguing villains. We aim to honor Stan’s legacy by not only creating exceptional superheroes but also crafting compelling supervillains. This project was close to Stan’s heart, and I recognize the importance of steering this team to uphold his vision.
Stan Lee’s Cinematic Legacy Will Be Timeless
1939 marked the start of Stan Lee’s comic writing career at Timely Comics. Later in 1961, this company underwent a transformation and was renamed Marvel Comics. In that very year, Stan Lee teamed up with Jack Kirby to introduce The Fantastic Four. Over the ensuing years, he collaborated on creating iconic superheroes such as Spider-Man, The Hulk, and numerous others who have since gained worldwide fame due to the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU).
In this current century, Stan Lee became famous for making appearances in every Marvel film, whether they were part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) or Fox’s X-Men series. These films not only delivered amazing superhero stories but also made finding Stan Lee’s appearances as exciting as searching for Waldo in a crowd, with fans eagerly waiting to spot the comic book icon. Some even speculated that he might have been one of The Watchers within the MCU. After his passing in 2018, Lee’s final appearance in the MCU was appropriately placed in Avengers: Endgame.
In current times, Marvel enthusiasts find themselves inhabiting a post-Stan Lee era, where his appearances on the big screen are no more. A startling reality unfolds, as the upcoming generation of MCU followers will be unaware of this influential figure, unless they revisit the entire cinematic saga, commencing with either Iron Man (or endure a challenging journey starting with The Incredible Hulk).
