New Trailer for 'Wolf Man' Teases Savage Body Horror Transformation

As a longtime horror enthusiast who has spent countless nights huddled under blankets while watching werewolf movies, I can confidently say that the new trailer for “Wolf Man” has me genuinely excited. The practical effects being used to depict Christopher Abbott’s transformation into a savage beast is a throwback to the 1980s classics like “The Howling” and “An American Werewolf in London,” which I still consider as the gold standard for werewolf transformations.

This year, body horror has become popular due to the release of Coralie Fargeat’s movie “The Substance”. Now, it seems that Universal is planning to capitalize on this trend as we move towards 2025, given the recent trailer for “Wolf Man”, which showcases Christopher Abbott’s grisly metamorphosis into a fierce creature. Directed by Leigh Whannell, this film is a fresh take on the 1941 original, and stars Julia Garner and Matilda Firth in addition to Abbott. Its plotline mirrors that of Whannell’s “The Invisible Man”, which was a huge success at the box office back in 2020.

The cast includes Abbott, Garner, and Firth portraying a family yearning for a new life in Oregon. However, their tranquil existence is disrupted when they become ensnared in a farmhouse, pursued by a werewolf lurking outside. Additionally, Abbott’s gruesome injury could potentially transform him into the same menacing creature internally. The latest preview for Wolf Man, available below, hints at what viewers can anticipate in January. Preliminary observations suggest that the filmmakers are emphasizing the visceral, horrifying aspects of the movie, predominantly by utilizing practical effects rather than computer-generated imagery to achieve this effect.

As a devoted fan, I can’t help but share my excitement upon watching the trailer. It begins with a loving family, us, traversing Oregon in our trusty truck, only for our journey to take an unexpected turn when Abbott swerves to dodge a grotesque roadblock – a man-beast! This unfortunate collision sends our vehicle careening into a tree and flipping onto its side. The man-beast is hot on our heels, forcing us to seek refuge in a farmhouse. Here, we catch a glimpse of Abbott’s transformation, which is remarkably reminiscent of the meticulous approach taken by 1980s classics like “The Howling” and “An American Werewolf in London.” Teeth falling out, hair shedding, and damaged fingernails stained with blood – all signs that something extraordinary is happening to Abbott’s body. Though it may not reach the levels of terror found in “The Substance,” fans of body horror will undoubtedly appreciate the filmmakers’ dedication to crafting a transformation as compelling as these timeless classics.

Leigh Whannell’s Creature Will Be Something We’ve ‘Never Seen Before’

In any werewolf movie, there’s an inherent level of anticipation from viewers due to the high standards set by special effects masters Rick Baker and Rob Bottin. Their transformations in ’80s classics served as a benchmark for future productions. However, when it comes to Whannell’s interpretation, he shared with Discussing Film earlier this year that he prefers to blaze his own trail instead of merely imitating the past. The outcome, according to him, will offer a unique werewolf character unlike any we’ve witnessed on the big screen.

Instead of aiming to surpass or expand on what’s already existed, I chose to create a unique take, one that sparks curiosity and wonder: “Look at this, I’ve never encountered anything quite like this before!

It’s yet unknown if Whannell will pull off this accomplishment, since his creature is being kept secret until its premiere on January 17. For now, we can only anticipate a few sneak peeks, but judging from the previews so far, we’re already eager to witness the full ferocity of his werewolf.
