The latest cover of New York magazine is causing controversy due to its depiction of a predominantly white celebration in Washington D.C., on the eve of President Donald Trump’s inauguration. However, it was discovered that the image had been edited to exclude several Black attendees who were present at the event.
This week, “New York” magazine’s cover showcases a spontaneous photograph from the Power 30 Awards, an event reportedly serving as a celebration for Trump’s inauguration, where awards were given to social media influencers who supported his reelection. Reuters reports this as fact. TikTok, which recently resumed operations after Trump’s initial decision to ban it, was the sponsor of this event. The main article on this topic, penned by Brock Colyar, is titled “The Cruel Kids’ Table,” and the cover teaser reads: “Out late with the rising right as they consider cultural control.
From the image showing a group of TikTok influencers socializing at Sax Restaurant and Lounge in downtown Washington on the night before Trump’s second term started, the evening’s Black co-host, CJ Pearson, was removed. However, the complete image featuring CJ Pearson, as well as two other Black attendees at the event, can be found within the article itself and also on the magazine’s website. The full uncropped image is available in the article on their online platform.
In my recent article, I noted that the majority of these Trump supporters resembled Pete Hegseth, dressed sharp in bow ties and black suits, sporting well-groomed appearances. The ladies, quite frankly, were a step above the average in terms of attractiveness. This observation was made during an event similar to the one at Sax.
On Mondays, conservative commentator Christopher Barnard swiftly highlighted an issue with the cropping in X, emphasizing that the reporter mentioned a woman inquired about it, stating that “[the] entire room appears to be white.
New York Magazine digitally removed every person of African descent from a cover image, then expressed surprise at the event being entirely populated by individuals of Caucasian descent.

In response to Barnard’s post on X, Pearson voiced his disapproval over three issues: being omitted from the cover, an incorrect portrayal in the article, and the presence of rapper Waka Flocka Flame and boxer Gervonta Davis, both African-Americans, at the event held on January 19th.
He expressed his disbelief, stating, ‘This is unbelievable!’ He organized an event but @NYMag failed to mention him in their article because it contradicted their portrayal of MAGA as a racist group. Moreover, they overlooked the presence of @WakaFlocka and @Gervontaa at the event. It appears he has not yet developed enough distrust towards liberal media.
It appears that New York Magazine claimed I held an exclusive, all-white inauguration party.
Apparently, the invitation didn’t reach any Black attendees? @XAVIAERD @VernonForGA @WakaFlocka

The New York piece suggests that Waka Flocka Flame was part of the performance, yet it fails to specify his racial identity.
As a fan, I shared multiple snaps of the Black guests at the pre-inaugural bash, commenting on the supposedly all-white event: “It seems these Black folks didn’t receive the invitation?
At the event, attendees of color included former Georgia state Representative Vernon Jones and Xavier DuRousseau from PragerU, as reported by the New York Post. While Xavier DuRousseau is quoted in the report, his race is not specified when he’s introduced as a “28-year-old conservative influencer.
On Tuesday evening, New York Magazine’s spokesperson issued a defense of their cover photo in response sent to The Hollywood Reporter.
According to the announcement, the latest feature article in the magazine delves into the rising group of conservative leaders making a big impact in Washington. This is depicted from the perspective of Inauguration Weekend, as suggested by the cover image. The cover photo has been centered and cropped for the print edition, but its full version can be found online. We think that both the cover and story offer an authentic representation of the events during that weekend.
