Nicholas Galitzine's He-Man Movie Just Cast The Badass Teela, And I Have One Big Question

As a gamer with decades of immersion in the vibrant world of Masters of the Universe, I’ve eagerly watched the franchise’s resurgence over the last few years like a hawk circling its prey. The casting of Camila Mendes as Teela is undoubtedly exciting news, but as someone who has seen their fair share of adaptations, I can’t help but wonder about her character’s role in the upcoming reboot.

In recent times, fans of the Masters of the Universe series have been enjoying a prosperous period due to several animated shows available on Netflix. Moreover, there’s been significant advancement regarding the long-awaited reboot movie for Masters of the Universe. After the project was abandoned by Netflix, Amazon MGM Studios took it over, with Travis Knight now slated as director and Nicholas Galitzine portraying He-Man. Today, we learn that Camila Mendes will bring Teela to life on screen. However, I have one query in light of this casting announcement:

In recent times, Camila Mendes has gained significant popularity, particularly for her role as Veronica Lodge in the TV series Riverdale on The CW. She’s been building an impressive film career with titles such as Palm Springs, Dangerous Lies, Do Revenge, and more. Her upcoming movie slate in 2024 includes Upgraded and Música, both of which can be watched on Prime Video. Additionally, she produced Griffin in Summer, which premiered at the Tribeca Festival in June but has yet to announce a wide release date. Notably, Mendes’ casting in Masters of the Universe makes her the first actor cast for this upcoming movie after nearly 20 years in development, aside from He-Man.

Previously, Teela was acted by Chelsea Field in the 1987 film “Masters of the Universe,” then voiced by Kimberly Brooks in the CGI animated series “He-Man and the Masters of the Universe.” More recently, Sarah Michelle Gellar played her in “Masters of the Universe: Revelation” and Melissa Benoist in “Masters of the Universe: Revolution.” This character is often shown as the adopted daughter of Man-At-Arms, who later becomes the Captain of the Royal Guard. She also typically instructs Prince Adam, He-Man’s civilian self, in combat skills. Additionally, she is commonly depicted as a love interest for He-Man, although in different versions, she isn’t initially aware that he and Adam are the same person.

As a longtime fan of the original Masters of the Universe series and having grown up with Teela being one of my favorite characters, I must say that I’m quite curious about how Camila Mendes’ portrayal of Teela will fit into the reboot. Based on my experience with the source material, I expect her to remain an ally to Nicholas Galitzine’s He-Man, but I can’t help but wonder if a romantic subplot might be introduced between the two characters.

In any event, “Masters of the Universe” offers Mendes a chance to act in a high-profile production, an area she hasn’t explored before. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Mendes, Clara Rugaard, Alexandra Shipp, and Quintessa Swindell all auditioned for the role two weeks ago. Mendes is also set to star in the reboot of “I Know What You Did Last Summer.”

The epic film titled “Masters of the Universe” is set to hit cinemas on June 5, 2026. Following its run in theaters, you’ll be able to catch it with an Amazon Prime Video subscription. Stay tuned to TopMob for further updates about the reboot.
