As a seasoned movie buff with decades of cinematic experiences under my belt, I can confidently say that Nick Frost is a gem in the world of film. His latest role as Gobber the Belch in the live-action adaptation of How to Train Your Dragon is a testament to his versatility and talent. Having been a fan of his work since Shaun of the Dead, it’s been a joy to see him grow as an actor and bring such depth to his characters.
It’s intriguing to observe who will bring characters to life when animated properties transition into live-action. For example, the How to Train Your Dragon series is set to come alive in a grand live-action form next year. While some voice actors from the franchise like Gerard Butler (Stoick the Vast) will carry their roles over, new actors are being chosen to fill in for others. Instead of Jay Baruchel, who voices Hiccup, the young lead character, Mason Thames has been cast for the live-action film. In place of Craig Ferguson, Gobber the Belch, Stoick’s friend, will be played by Nick Frost, known for his humorous performances in Shaun of the Dead, Hot Fuzz, Hyperspace, and the recent release Black Cab.
In a recent MovieWeb interview, Frost shared his delight about being friends with Gerard Butler, stating, “What’s fantastic is how large and good-looking he is.” He added, “And you know, it’s nice to have a warm hug at the start and end of the day. I had a fantastic time on that movie set.” Frost went on to say:
I’ve been a longtime admirer of Gerard, but when you actually meet him, he surpasses all expectations. He’s diligent, kind-hearted, humorous, and an exceptional actor. Watching him perform is a joy. Even after 23 years in the industry, I continue to be enthused about my work. It’s a privilege to witness such talented actors excel at their craft. The admiration isn’t misplaced.
In Cressida Cowell’s book series, the character Gobber is initially introduced as someone whose noises are louder than a scream. He stands at an impressive seven feet tall, has a single, fiery eye, and a wild, firework-like beard. Despite the frigid temperatures, he dons hairy shorts and a minuscule deer hide vest, exposing his sunburned skin and prominent muscles. This description undoubtedly brings Nick Frost to mind.
Nick Frost Trusts Dean DeBlois & You Should Too
Fear not, enthusiasts of the “How to Train Your Dragon” series, as the enchantment found in the animated films will likely persist in the upcoming live-action movie. This is because the creative mind behind all of them, Dean DeBlois, is not only scripting but also directing the live-action version. Frost, speaking to Collider, had nothing but praise for him.
“He’s just f*cking lovely. He’s funny, he’s clever, and he’s smart, and you’re just like, ‘Okay, he’s got it. Relax. Don’t worry about it. Just learn your lines and have fun.’ It’s so nice knowing that someone’s just got you. Also, he’d come along sometimes, and he’d be like, ‘You want a drink? You alright?’ You’d be like, ‘I’m fine. Don’t worry about me.’ He worries and he cares about everyone.”
Currently, Frost dreams of transitioning a voice-acted character into live-action within the Star Wars universe. Frost lends his voice to a grumpy, worn-out droid named SM 33 in Star Wars: The Skeleton Crew, yet he remains optimistic about stepping onto the set as well. “I was worried I’d just be a droid and that would be it,” shared Frost. “But Jon Favreau sent me a personal message saying, even though you’ve voiced a character, we might still see you in live-action someday. So, who knows? If they need a slightly overweight Welsh actor, I’m ready.” In the interim, Frost’s film Black Cab is available to stream on Shudder.
