Nicolas Cage Recalls Moment He “Could Have Died” While Training for ‘The Surfer’

Training for his latest psychological thriller, titled “The Surfer“, wasn’t a walk in the park for Nicolas Cage.

The award-winning actor shared with Entertainment Weekly that he had a tight schedule for learning to surf before shooting in Australia and battled the elements throughout the process.

Cage mentioned that he’s tried surfing before, but each time he attempted it, he was left battered and bruised. He surfed at Sunset Beach and his instructor provided him with a shortboard, but he requested a longboard instead.

Yet, the extended board didn’t prove particularly useful since he was repeatedly overpowered by the relentless ocean waves and found himself caught in a rip current at one instance. “They claimed to spot my board, they referred to it as ‘tombstone,’ much like its triangular top,” the actor elaborated, pointing out that the top of his surfboard often stood erect above the water’s surface.

As I’m flipping my way up this rope, it felt like I was dancing with death itself. Now that I have a little one at home, I’m not so sure I want to take those risks again.

Regardless of the obstacles, he’s willing to take another swing at it. “My aim,” he explained, “is to hang up my boots, catch some waves, enjoy a glass of red wine, and savor a bowl of spaghetti.

A Man, portrayed by Cage, goes back to the tranquil beach of his youth for a surfing session with his son. Yet, when he encounters mockery from a band of natives, this man finds himself entangled in a struggle that tests his limits to the utmost extent.

The film, directed by Lorcan Finnegan, is currently playing in theaters.
