Released back in 2013, Joe is directed and co-produced by David Gordon Green (Halloween) and written by Gary Hawkins. Based on Larry Brown’s 1991 novel of the same name, the crime drama stars an uneasily quiet and subdued Nicolas Cage alongside Tye Sheridan and finds Cage playing a tormented man who hires a 15-year-old boy to work as part of his Texan tree-poisoning crew. The movie, and Cage’s powerful performance in particular, were met with rave reviews from critics, with Joe landing a score of 87% on Rotten Tomatoes. Primal, meanwhile, was released in 2019, and follows Cage on much zanier territory as a big-game hunter who, while transporting a dangerous white jaguar aboard a ship that also finds an assassin among its inhabitants (because, of course it does), finds himself hunting the world’s most dangerous game: man. Directed by Nick Powell and starring Famke Janssen, Kevin Durand, LaMonica Garrett, and Michael Imperiol alongside Cage, you can check out the official synopsis for Primal below.

Primal is met with a significantly different reception compared to Joe’s response. Instead of positive acclaim, the action thriller was panned, earning “rotten” ratings of 39% and 22% from critics and audiences respectively. Critics’ consensus states that the film is mostly appealing to Nicolas Cage completists and dedicated B-movie enthusiasts, as it lacks the energy found in Primal.
