, will land on free streaming at the exact same time that one of Cage’s worst movies, the action thriller
, will also become available. This exciting Nic Cage one-two punch is all thanks to the free streaming platform
, with fans being able to explore the actor’s range like never before.

Released back in 2013, Joe is directed and co-produced by David Gordon Green (Halloween) and written by Gary Hawkins. Based on Larry Brown’s 1991 novel of the same name, the crime drama stars an uneasily quiet and subdued Nicolas Cage alongside Tye Sheridan and finds Cage playing a tormented man who hires a 15-year-old boy to work as part of his Texan tree-poisoning crew. The movie, and Cage’s powerful performance in particular, were met with rave reviews from critics, with Joe landing a score of 87% on Rotten Tomatoes. You can check out the official synopsis for Joe below.

The leader of the logging team, who is rugged and tough-looking (Nicolas Cage), lands himself in a tricky situation when he intervenes to shield the newest member (Tye Sheridan) of his group from an abusive parent.

Unlike ‘Joe,’ ‘Primal’ Finds Nic Cage on Much Zanier Territory

Primal, meanwhile, was released in 2019, and follows Cage on much zanier territory as a big-game hunter who, while transporting a dangerous white jaguar aboard a ship that also finds an assassin among its inhabitants (because, of course it does), finds himself hunting the world’s most dangerous game: man. Directed by Nick Powell and starring Famke Janssen, Kevin Durand, LaMonica Garrett, and Michael Imperiol alongside Cage, you can check out the official synopsis for Primal below.

“Hunter and collector Frank Walsh expects a big payday after bagging a priceless white jaguar for a zoo. But the ship bearing Frank’s precious cargo has another predator — a political assassin facing extradition to America. When the prisoner manages to break free, Walsh must utilize his expert skills to capture the dangerous killer — not dead, but alive.”

Primal is met with a significantly different reception compared to Joe’s response. Instead of positive acclaim, the action thriller was panned, earning “rotten” ratings of 39% and 22% from critics and audiences respectively. Critics’ consensus states that the film is mostly appealing to Nicolas Cage completists and dedicated B-movie enthusiasts, as it lacks the energy found in Primal.

Nicolas Cage continues to jump from prestigious pictures like Pig to more unhinged B-movie-esque fare like Sympathy for the Devil. The actor has several exciting projects currently in the pipeline, including the long-awaited sequel Lords of War, the live-action Marvel Spider-Man series, Spider-Noir, the psychological thriller The Surfer, western outing Gunslingers, and the religious horror movie The Carpenter’s Son.
