As a seasoned gamer and film enthusiast with over three decades of watching movies under my belt, I must say that Nicole Kidman‘s career choices have always been intriguing. Her foray into superhero projects like Batman Forever and Aquaman is no exception, and it seems her motivation for taking these roles goes beyond the conventional paycheck.
Actress Nicole Kidman has enjoyed a lengthy and prosperous career that encompasses both movies and television. Throughout this period, she has accepted various roles in superhero productions, with standout performances in “Batman Forever” and the “Aquaman” series (both of which can be streamed with a Max subscription). She recently disclosed her reasons for accepting these roles, emphasizing that it wasn’t primarily for financial gain.
As a die-hard DC movie fan, I can’t help but marvel at the transformation of Nicole Kidman’s characters throughout the series. From being Batman’s distressed damsel in “Batman Forever,” she evolved into the powerful Atlantean queen and warrior in “Aquaman.” In an interview with L’Officiel, she shared what captivated her about these roles. Reflecting on her portrayal of Chase Meridian in Joel Schumacher’s “Batman Forever,” she expressed:
People often ask me, “What’s your reason for doing this?” My response is usually, “I do it because I get to kiss Batman.” What many don’t realize is that it’s not about the paycheck. Many of the mainstream big-budget films I work on aim to be unique and different from the rest.
Points were made. It sounds like it was a bucket list moment for Kidman to kiss Val Kilmer’s Batman, with or without his signature cowl. So she signed on for Shumacher’s first Batman movie, playing journalist and love interest to Bruce Wayne, Chase Meridian.
In the opening scene of the live-action Batman film, Kidman appears prominently, suggesting a substantial role rather than a minor one in the blockbuster. However, she unfortunately slipped into the stereotype of being the character in peril, as she was abducted by the Riddler (played by Jim Carrey) and Two-Face (portrayed by Tom Lee Jones), during the climactic act.
Her experience as Queen Atlanna within the DCEU differed from what she initially anticipated, as she found herself involved in several exhilarating action scenes, notably the one-shot prologue battle of the first ‘Aquaman’ film. Interestingly, she had assumed it would be a frightening movie and was eager to collaborate with horror maestro James Wan. In her own words:
I’d really wanted to work with him in horror.
As of now, I haven’t had the chance yet, but if I did, I would have been part of the team that worked on both Aquaman movies, with The Lost Kingdom serving as the concluding chapter for the DCEU. Here’s hoping that Nicole Kidman and Wan can join forces to create a genuine horror movie sooner, rather than later!
It appears that Kidman’s acting choices don’t seem to be influenced by financial gain, but rather by the projects and directors she finds appealing. This might be the reason behind her prolonged career in the industry, which includes executive producing hit TV series like HBO’s “Big Little Lies” and “The Undoing”.
You can watch Nicole Kidman in “Batman Forever” and both “Aquaman” films by streaming them via Max. Keep an eye on the 2025 movie release dates as you make plans for cinema outings in the upcoming New Year.
