As a long-time admirer of Nicole Kidman, witnessing her acceptance speech for The Hollywood Reporter’s Sherry Lansing Leadership Award was nothing short of inspiring. Her journey through friendship, collaboration, and mentorship with Laura Dern is a testament to the power of women supporting one another in the entertainment industry.
At the Women in Entertainment gala hosted by THR and sponsored by Lifetime in Los Angeles on Wednesday, Nicole Kidman acknowledged and honored the individuals who have encouraged and inspired her throughout her career, among them being her late mother, during her speech upon receiving The Hollywood Reporter’s Sherry Lansing Leadership Award.
Actress Laura Dern, a fellow star from ‘Big Little Lies’, bestowed an honor upon Nicole Kidman. This award is given to pioneers and benefactors in the entertainment and media industries. In her speech, Dern celebrated their 25-year friendship, referring to Kidman as her “mentor, compass, producer, partner, confidante” and occasionally, “counselor”.
Dern stated that he initially became acquainted with Nic through friendship. He’s unsure of the circumstances – despite being from Santa Monica, California – but 25 years ago, he was welcomed into the Australian circle. This circle is a fantastic assembly of cherished friends and artists who support and promote one another.
Later, I was fortunate enough to see Nicole in action as both my producer and co-actor on Big Little Lies, a role she excelled in. Now, we’re not just colleagues, but partners in a new project we’re working on together. This is where I’ve observed her dedication, particularly in uplifting women, not just offering support, but creating significant opportunities for them with unwavering determination.
In a subsequent discussion, Dern emphasized Kidman’s dedication to collaborating with female directors since 2017 (notably, four out of her six ongoing projects are directed by women). Furthermore, Dern expressed great admiration for Kidman’s portrayal in the movie “Babygirl,” which was helmed by Halina Reijn. According to Dern, this film provides a unique perspective on the intricacies of the human condition and the societal pressures placed upon women.
Dern closed her speech by thanking Kidman for her leadership.
Nicole’s schedule is incredibly busy, but she consistently shows up everywhere,” Dern noted. “She’s not just an actor and producer, but also a devoted mother, wife, daughter, sister, friend, advocate, and neighbor. Her decorations are unparalleled, making her the best neighbor anyone could ask for. I can attest to this because I’ve seen her do it for years. For Nicole, leadership is about bringing everyone in with her.
Kidman thanked Dern, whom she referred to as both her “trusted friend,” during her acceptance speech. She also recognized Sherry Lansing, the pioneering woman who led a significant Hollywood studio and the first industry executive that Kidman met upon arriving in the U.S. from Australia.
Kidman described her early career as extraordinary due to her feelings of nervousness, intimidation, and uncertainty about her future as a young actress from Australia. However, she encountered a woman who was genuine, took interest in her work – although it was limited at the time – and spoke to her with respect, making her feel valued.
Kidman emphasized that while this is the leadership award, it’s crucial to highlight the focus on mentorship – both having great mentors and being mentored. That’s exactly what Sherry has provided to everyone, including Kidman herself.
Later on, Kidman expressed her gratitude towards the past recipients of the award, such as Adele, Charlize Theron, Reese Witherspoon, Viola Davis, Meryl Streep, Barbra Streisand, and Oprah Winfrey. She even mentioned that she had the pleasure of working alongside some of them on set or even in the makeup room.
The THR cover star expressed that some of these individuals have become my most treasured and intimate friends. I’ve turned to them during difficult times, when I’m feeling sorrowful or battling struggles. When I’m feeling low or depressed, they’ve been there for me. They’ve shown up, offering guidance, encouragement, and reminding me that the future holds promise,” said the cover star.
Kidman expressed her gratitude towards the “rising star” that she has collaborated with and learned from, among whom is Reijn.
Today, she’s right here, and I consider myself fortunate to have collaborated with her. What makes me even happier is the opportunity to utilize the influence I’ve received and pay it forward,” Kidman expressed about the director.
A particularly touching part of Kidman’s speech was when she paid tribute to her daughters and her late mother, Janelle Ann Kidman, who passed away in September. During her speech at an event on Tuesday, the actress from “The Perfect Couple” recounted a heartwarming moment with her daughter Faith, who comforted her after Kidman was overwhelmed by the loss of her mother.
I’d like to mention that my daughter, Faith, is with me too. Last night, in an attempt to juggle everything, I found myself at her choir concert, watching her beautifully sing. Afterward, we hopped on a plane and made our way here. Upon arrival, tears filled my eyes as I was reminded of my mother’s love for me, her unwavering support, and her deep appreciation for education,” Kidman expressed.
Three months had passed since the loss, but there she was, my daughter, standing before me with her entire future unfolding. She was about to board a plane with me, and in many ways, she’d been my guide,” Kidman said. “I wept beside her and she comforted me, saying, ‘It’s alright, mom. You’ll be alright.’ Today, she stands by my side, offering support. Although I no longer have my mother, I am blessed with my daughters.
Last night, Faith functioned as my trusted guide, imparting her knowledge to me. Consequently, I find myself in a better state today, avoiding the appearance of disarray.
At the end of her speech, Kidman expressed gratitude towards her agent who has been there for her during challenging times by saying, “I want to thank him for being by my side when I needed him most.” Furthermore, she urged everyone to find a mentor and offer assistance to others.
Extend a helping hand today as you depart from here, by mentoring someone, for you never truly grasp the significance of assistance and guidance until you receive it,” Kidman suggested. “This room is filled with influential individuals. So, share your support, guide someone effectively, because the world will experience the positive outcomes, and you might change a life in the same manner that Sherry Lansing influenced mine.
