Following an exceptional theatrical run, the movie “Babygirl,” produced by A24, is set to premiere on streaming platform Max in April. In this film, Nicole Kidman portrays Romy Mathis, a powerful CEO who embarks on an affair with her young intern, Samuel (Harris Dickinson). This illicit relationship ultimately risks both her career and personal life, as Romy finds herself surrendering control during their passionate encounters. Directed by Halina Reijn, “Babygirl” also features Antonio Banderas and Sophie Wilde in supporting roles. This movie turned out to be a surprise box office success and social media sensation on TikTok. When it streams again, it is expected to regain popularity.
It has been officially announced that the movie “Babygirl” will be released on Max on April 25, 2025, and on HBO linear services the next day, April 26, at 8:00 p.m. ET. After spending four months in theaters, “Babygirl,” produced by A24, will become available for streaming. The film stopped reporting its box office figures after the weekend of February 21-23, following a special re-release in theaters for Valentine’s Day.
On Christmas Day, 2024, Babygirl made its debut in cinemas, offering an alternative, mature viewing experience much like Nosferatu did. Despite opening at the box office in seventh place with earnings of $7.3 million over the five-day holiday weekend, Babygirl demonstrated impressive staying power, experiencing a minimal drop of just 0.5% in its second week. The film went on to earn $28.1 million domestically and an additional $63.8 million internationally, making it the seventh highest-grossing A24 production worldwide. With a production budget of $20 million and a reported breakeven point set at $50 million, Babygirl proved to be a profitable venture.
‘Babygirl’ Didn’t Need Awards To Be a Hit
Despite being relatively overlooked during award season, with the exception of Conan O’Brien’s humorous jibe about Antonio Banderas in his role as a man struggling to please his partner, the movie “Babygirl” proved to be a profitable venture and can be considered a success. The film surpassed domestic box office earnings of Academy Award Best Picture nominees such as “Anora,” “The Brutalist,” and “The Substance,” and even outperformed more conventional franchise and IP films like “Wolf Man” and “Love Hurts.” At a time when adult-oriented erotic thrillers are not commonly produced, “Babygirl” appeared to resonate with an audience seeking such a film.
When “Babygirl” makes its debut on HBO and Max, it’s expected to gain even more traction among audiences who might have previously missed it in cinemas, much like “Saltburn” did when it joined Prime Video in 2023. Streaming services like HBO Max and Max have become essential for film enthusiasts, as they now host award-winning films such as the Best Animated Film “Flow”, lesser-known gems like the horror-romance “Your Monster”, and A24’s chilling horror film “Heretic”. The platform also boasts a wealth of recent genre movies that didn’t fare well at the box office. With its ever-expanding library, it won’t be long before “Babygirl” becomes available to add to your watchlist on Max, which is now the exclusive streaming home for all A24 titles.
