As a film enthusiast with a deep appreciation for European cinema and its artists, I can genuinely say that the passing of Niels Arestrup is a significant loss to the world of movies. Born into humble beginnings, Arestrup’s journey from public housing projects to the silver screen is nothing short of inspiring.
The renowned French-Danish actor Niels Arestrup tragically passed away on Sunday, December 1, 2024, as confirmed by his spouse, the actress and writer Isabelle Le Nouvel. Although he may not be widely recognized among mainstream Western viewers, Arestrup holds the record in France for the most César Awards for Best Supporting Actor and has graced films directed by some of Europe’s most esteemed filmmakers – Alain Resnais, Chantal Akerman, Claude Lelouch, Marco Ferreri, Jacques Audiard, Julian Schnabel, Bertrand Tavernier, Volker Schlöndorff, and Albert Dupontel, in addition to American directors such as Steven Spielberg and Angelina Jolie. In a press release issued by AFP, Isabelle Le Nouvel expressed:
With deep regret, I share the heartbreaking news of the passing of my beloved husband, the remarkable actor Niels Arestrup. After a valiant battle against his illness, he left us peacefully, enveloped in the embrace of his family’s love.
Raised by working-class parents and residing in public housing projects during his youth, Arestrup dropped out of school and worked various odd jobs until the late ’60s when he entered theater. His stage performances showcased plays written by esteemed playwrights like Molière, Anton Chekhov, Jean Genet, Harold Pinter, August Strindberg, Sam Shepard, Anton Tchekhov, and Edward Albee. Simultaneously, he accepted television roles and gradually became a recognizable figure in French cinema.
An Actor Who Lived and Breathed Cinema
Arestrup was not only a talented artist but also a person of kindness. Directors frequently chose to collaborate with him multiple times, demonstrating his friendly proficiency. His collaboration with Jacques Audiard is arguably his most renowned, leading to two critically acclaimed performances and films – “The Heart I Skipped at My Own Beat” (a character-driven remake of James Toback’s ’70s thriller “Fingers”) and the Cannes-winning masterpiece “A Prophet,” a story about surviving prison and gang life.
Among the actors who collaborated with Arestrup are Catherine Deneuve, Jean-Paul Belmondo, Max von Sydow, Miou-Miou, Maria Schneider, Willem Dafoe, Mads Mikkelsen, Oscar Isaac, Isabelle Huppert, Glenn Close, Marion Cotillard, Mathieu Amalric, Melanie Laurent, Romain Duris, Emily Watson, Kristin Scott Thomas, Brad Pitt, Stellan Skarsgård, Angelina Jolie, Jeanne Moreau, and others.
According to MovieWeb’s viewpoint, besides the previously mentioned films by Audiard, The Diving Bell and the Butterfly is one of Arestrup’s best performances.
