As a fan who has been following Night Court since its original run and now, seeing the return of this beloved sitcom is like finding an old friend you haven’t seen in years but pick up conversations with immediately. The season 3 premiere was a delightful ride, filled with suspense, humor, and a touch of nostalgia that only Night Court can deliver.
Spoilers ahead for the Season 3 premiere of Night Court, called “The Judge’s Boyfriend’s Dad.”
In 2024, “Night Court” is scheduled to return on TV, continuing the storyline that began in Season 2’s finale, which hinted at the possibility that Dan (John Larroquette) might be Jake’s (Ryan Hansen) biological father. Abby (Melissa Rauch), who started dating Jake, found herself in a tricky situation as she worried about keeping this potential secret. The new season kicked off with Abby struggling to deal with this dilemma, and comedic situations unfolded when she had to confirm or deny whether she and Jake were secret siblings. I recently interviewed both Larroquette and Hansen, and the former “Veronica Mars” cast member was particularly touched by what Larroquette revealed about him.
It’s still not clear if Dan is Jake’s biological dad, but when I spoke with John Larroquette during NBC’s Night Court press junket, I asked for his thoughts on Ryan Hansen being cast as the person who might be his secret son for the Season 2 finale cliffhanger. (The Season 2 finale is available streaming with a Peacock subscription.) Larroquette responded:
As the executive producer of the show, I have a good understanding of all the aspects we’ll be exploring, and Dan Rubin and I had numerous discussions about it. When Ryan initially appeared on the show as the HR guy in an episode, he stood out with excellent comedic timing, is quite handsome, and enjoyable to work with. He’s quite the charmer, or a real player, as they say. I actually learned more about him from my youngest son, Benjamin, who is also the composer for Night Court and happened to be a fan of his on Party Down. He suggested that I watch Ryan’s work there, which I did and became a fan of him too.
Apart from extolling Ryan Hansen’s on-set performance in Night Court, John Larroquette also developed a fandom for him beyond their NBC sitcom roles, particularly due to his work in Party Down. I recently spoke with Hansen, and when he playfully inquired if Larroquette remembered his name, I relayed the praises the Night Court star/EP had bestowed. This promptly brought a smile to Hansen’s face, and he responded:
Oh, what a guy! I’ll take it! Thanks, Dad… maybe.
Being excited to hear praise from John Larroquette didn’t translate to Ryan Hansen dropping any spoilers about whether Dan truly is Jake’s dad, so fans will have to wait for the next episode for the answer to that question. He did have high praise for Larroquette, though, saying this about getting to sync up their mannerisms for some of the moments that truly alarmed Abby:
I admire John greatly, and I often observe his career and comedic talent. After all, he’s won four Emmys for the same show! So, I find myself studying him naturally, and then it happened that we might have a chance to become father and son, sharing some common traits. This development felt organic, but we did discuss our roles, like me focusing on one aspect while he handles another. There was a discussion about it, but the connection came quite effortlessly because I already look up to him so much and closely follow his career.
Few people wouldn’t admire someone who has won numerous Emmy awards due to the incredible success they’ve had in sitcoms throughout their career. It’s yet uncertain whether Larroquette and Hansen will portray a father-son relationship as Season 3 progresses, or if their scenes together were just a confusing situation that caused Abby unnecessary stress.
It seems that Hansen had been unable to influence the solution of the cliffhanger, regardless of his intentions, for quite some time now. When questioned about whether he knew the answer to the paternity mystery during the filming of the Season 2 finale, he disclosed:
Indeed, I hadn’t discovered the reason until the second episode of Season 3, which left me eagerly anticipating the answer. I was genuinely taken aback and intrigued by the revelation.
Viewers will discover if they share the same reaction of being “astonished and taken aback” about whether Dan is Jake’s father in the upcoming episode of Night Court, set to air on Tuesday, November 26 at 8:30 p.m. ET on NBC after St. Denis Medical. The season promises much excitement beyond its two-part premiere, with further exploration of the strained relationship between Julianne and Dan, as described by Wendie Malick, and another get-together for Melissa Rauch reminiscent of her time on The Big Bang Theory.
