‘Night of the Living Dead’ Reboot Sequel SHOCKING Update!

It appears that the reboot is progressing swiftly, rather than meandering, as the script for George A. Romero’s classic zombie horror movie remake is nearing completion. This upcoming film, which could be considered a sequel-reboot – similar to Dawn of the Dead – was initially planned for release in 2022 following MGM’s acquisition of the rights and the hiring of director Nikyatu Jusu and writer LaToya Morgan. Morgan brings extensive experience with the undead to this project, having served as a producer and writer for The Walking Dead previously.

Despite minimal discussion about the upcoming movie since its initial announcement, Morgan recently offered an update during an interview with ScreenRant while promoting her new series Duster, which she co-created. Her remarks suggest that progress on the film might be more advanced than one might expect. She stated that things are actually much farther along than many people would have thought.

Absolutely! The script has been submitted to the studio, and we have an outstanding director on board. We’re nearing completion, though I can’t reveal too much yet, but we’re almost there. To put it simply, things are moving forward swiftly. And let me tell you, working on this project was a pleasure. George Romero’s Night of the Living Dead is one of my favorites!

Taking on a Romero Classic Was Not a Certainty for Morgan

Initially, numerous screenwriters would seize the opportunity to delve into such a significant and renowned universe. However, Morgan initially declined the invitation to contribute to the upcoming film. Yet, a plea from the family of the late genre legend prompted her to reconsider her decision. She further mentioned:

Originally, the film was massive, and I hesitated to get involved multiple times due to my deep admiration for it. It’s almost iconic in horror cinema, making me an ardent fan of the genre. There are certain films you don’t dare to alter, but my family requested a rewatch and suggested ideas for potential improvements. The notion intrigued me, leading me to exclaim, “Oh no, I have to take this on now.” After presenting my pitch, they were thrilled with the idea, and we then approached various studios with it. Fortunately, several companies expressed interest, and we ultimately ended up at Amazon MGM. Fingers crossed that a film will be produced soon!

Although this newly released film carries the endorsement of the Romero family, it’s not the sole “Living Dead” project under development. The late George Romero’s wife, Suzanne, has been striving to contribute her own sequel titled “Twilight of the Dead“. Reportedly, Brad Anderson was attached as director for this movie in 2023, similar to Jusu and Morgan’s project. However, updates on both productions have been scarce since then. It seems almost certain that Romero’s world will make its way back to the big screen at some point in the future.
