On June 5, Nintendo plans to debut the next-generation Nintendo Switch 2 gaming console, priced at a starting point of $450, as announced by the company this past Wednesday.
The long-awaited debut (the first Nintendo Switch came out in 2017) is set to feature a fresh title from the beloved Mario Kart series titled Mario Kart World. This new game combines traditional race modes from the series with open-world gameplay. Moreover, Nintendo has announced that they will release a new Donkey Kong game, called Donkey Kong Bananaza, in July.
Nintendo has traditionally set itself apart from other video game companies by emphasizing original intellectual properties it owns. More recently, within the past few years, Nintendo has started to delve into the broader entertainment world, with its most notable foray being the Super Mario Bros. movie produced by Illumination, which also features Donkey Kong as a character.
Sony is also developing a live-action Legend of Zelda film.
Nintendo announced the news at a Nintendo Direct event Wednesday morning.
Just as anticipated, the new Switch 2 model is set to feature physical enhancements over its predecessor. These upgrades include a built-in 7.9-inch 1080p screen and magnetically attached redesigned Joy-Con 2 controllers.
In a significant shift, Nintendo is set to emphasize the social elements that have come to define the video game industry since the launch of their initial console eight years ago. Modern games such as Roblox and Fortnite serve not just as arenas for competition but also venues where players engage in conversations and interactions while they play.
The upcoming Switch 2 model is set to introduce a new feature called GameChat, enabling users to engage in conversations with their friends during gameplay.
In a statement, Nintendo President Shuntaro Furukawa stated that the Nintendo Switch 2 represents the next evolution in at-home gaming with portable capabilities. This advancement, built upon eight years of exploration and innovation since the original Nintendo Switch, offers new features to enhance gaming experiences. Furukawa believes that the Nintendo Switch 2 marks a significant step forward in our mission to bring joy to everyone who interacts with Nintendo.
