Nintendo Surprises Fans with a New Music App for Classic Game Tunes

As a gamer with memories as old as the original NES controller, I must admit that the Nintendo Music App has taken me by surprise. I mean, who would have thought that we’d be jamming to classic Nintendo tunes on our Switch before the year ends?

If you keep up with gaming news this year, your 2024 gaming bingo card may include games like Assassin’s Creed Shadows or Black Myth: Wukong. You might have also included Helldivers 2 and Stellar Blade, but I can guarantee that you didn’t anticipate Nintendo releasing a music app before the end of this year. With numerous rumors about the Switch 2 over the past few months, gamers were not expecting Nintendo to challenge Spotify in the market.

The Nintendo Tunes App offers gamers an opportunity to enjoy iconic Nintendo melodies. Ranging from Animal Crossing to Splatoon, enthusiasts can stream their preferred video game soundtracks as far as they possess a Nintendo Online membership. Following the app’s debut, Nintendo devotees have been discussing the initial piece of music they looked for on the platform, aiming to rekindle that cherished nostalgia.

The user u/jf0ssGremlin initially posted a screenshot on Reddit showing an app playing the well-known theme from the Wii U Shop Channel main menu, mentioning that it was one of the first things they always checked. Many fans also appreciated the nostalgic tune of the Wii U Shop Channel, with one even sharing a popular internet meme from the early 2000s inspired by the same theme.

One fan shared that the first music they searched for was a song from Donkey Kong Country. Another said that they searched for Gusty Garden Galaxy. Others mentioned that they chose the same Wii U Shop Main Theme song and extended it to 60 minutes, a nice feature Nintendo added should you prefer to play one song for longer periods.

Although lots of Nintendo enthusiasts are excited about the new music app, some might need to be patient for future upgrades because the app is currently available in just a few countries. For those living outside these areas, they’ll need to discover alternative methods to enjoy their favorite video game tunes until Nintendo expands their service availability.
