Nintendo Switch 1 Games Won’t Get a Free Upgrade to the Switch 2

As excitement builds over the Nintendo Switch 2 taking center stage in gaming news, an increasing number of titles are being revealed for its launch, such as Mario Kart World, Cyberpunk 2077, and a fresh Donkey Kong game. Yet, one specific announcement has left many puzzled: What exactly are the paid upgrade plans for the Nintendo Switch 2?

It appears that Nintendo might have been influenced by the upgrade strategy used by PlayStation, allowing players to enhance PS4 games into their enhanced PS5 versions – offering better graphics and speed – for a modest additional cost.

Known as the Nintendo Switch 2 Upgrade, this paid package lets gamers enjoy select original Switch games like Kirby: The Forgotten Land, The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, and The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom on the new Nintendo Switch 2, at an extra charge. If you’ve already purchased these games, you have the option to upgrade them for a fee, but keep in mind it doesn’t come at no cost.

Great news! Members of Nintendo Switch Online + Expansion Pack have the advantage of upgrading their initial versions of Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom for free without any additional charges.

Additionally, games such as Metroid Prime 4: Beyond can be played on both the original and updated versions of the Nintendo Switch. Yet, for enhanced graphics like 4K resolution at 60 frames per second, HDR, and mouse control compatibility, you’ll need to upgrade to the Nintendo Switch 2 if you currently own the basic Nintendo Switch 1.

In addition, it’s worth noting that Game Freak’s new title Pokémon Z-A can be played on the standard Nintendo Switch. However, if you desire a more graphically advanced gaming experience, you’ll need to invest in the Nintendo Switch 2 Upgraded Version.

It’s still uncertain how much you’ll need to pay for the upgrade fee. The individual versions of these games for the Nintendo Switch 2, whether physical or digital, are expected to be released as well.

The upcoming Nintendo Switch 2, priced at $449.99, seems poised to become the costliest Nintendo gaming system in history. Moreover, potential releases like Mario Kart World, estimated to sell at approximately $80, might establish a fresh pricing benchmark for Nintendo video games.
