No Denuvo for Space Marine 2! 🎮 Discover why this news has fans cheering. 🛡️

As someone who has spent countless hours huddled around my trusty gaming rig, I can’t help but breathe a sigh of relief at the news that Warhammer 40K: Space Marine 2 is ditching Denuvo. I’ve seen firsthand the frustration and performance issues that this digital rights management system can cause, not to mention the occasional existential dread when I find myself waiting for a server response while my character stands frozen in place like a digital statue.

Just days prior to the worldwide launch of Warhammer 40K: Space Marine 2, its developer, Saber Interactive, announced that the game would be DRM-free, as they have also provided an extensive FAQ regarding this decision.

For the upcoming game, there won’t be a Digital Rights Management system; instead, it will offer an anti-cheat service through Easy Anti Cheat. Many gamers are thrilled about the news that Space Marine 2 won’t use Denuvo at its launch.

What exactly is DRM, and why do so many gamers hate it?

Denuvo Aims To Prevent Software Tampering and Piracy

Introduced in 2014, Denuvo represents an anti-piracy software created by Denuvo Software Solutions GmbH. This system necessitates the games that utilize it to be activated over the internet.

As Empress, a recognized Denuvo code-breaker shared in an interview with Wired, Denuvo generates a custom authentication ticket for each game copy which includes various details like the user’s hardware ID. This gives Denuvo strong digital rights management (DRM) capabilities but can be challenging to crack. Unfortunately, Denuvo is often criticized by gamers for another reason entirely.

Denuvo Causes Performance Issues and Hardware Wear-and-Tear

Several hardware and performance issues plague Denuvo. From frame rate drops to high CPU usage, many claimed that Denuvo brings these issues, albeit preventing game piracy. Games such as Tekken 7 and Resident Evil Village suffered performance issues under Denuvo and were confirmed via several tests.

2021 saw several of my favorite games with Denuvo protection become unplayable for me, as one of their domains went past its expiration date. I found myself unable to play the games I had bought and paid for, due to this technical hiccup that needed fixing.

In this case, it creates another problem: players find themselves under the control of Denuvo regarding the timing of accessing their acquired video games.

Denuvo Is a Publisher’s Boon But A Consumer’s Bane

Game publishers often rely on Denuvo as a means to combat piracy, but it’s the consumers who end up dealing with the drawbacks of this Digital Rights Management (DRM) system. Notably, Denuvo has faced some hardware-related problems, and it necessitates regular online authentication. This could be problematic for single-player games that don’t require an internet connection to play.

Although the gaming sector is still striving to strike a balance in producing high-quality games and setting reasonable prices, some question the necessity of a digital rights management system like Denuvo when buying games, due to its perceived difficulties for consumers.
