The foundation of the entertainment world lies in narratives. Typically, these stories adhere to the hero’s journey, a consistent pattern that the main character traverses, making it possible for them to be deemed as heroes. This structure is prevalent because it forms the base for much-loved classics and contemporary media alike. Lately, there has been a revival of adaptations from classical stories, which are now being showcased in films and contemporary entertainment. The interest in these adaptations is evident as they have managed to make these classics more accessible to the masses. This resurgence has sparked something of a trend, with A24, Christopher Nolan, Sydney Sweeney, among others, contributing significantly to it. I wholeheartedly support this trend.
The Movies Spearheading This Trend
To begin with, the film titled Nosferatu may not be directly derived from traditional literature, but it serves as a remake of F.W. Murnau’s famous Nosferatu: A Symphony of Horror. Interestingly, this Symphony of Horror was an unauthorized adaptation of Bram Stoker’s Dracula. Several scenes and shots in both versions of Nosferatu closely resemble the original narrative and structure of Dracula. In both stories, a man embarks on a journey to Transylvania where he encounters the title character, despite societal pressure pushing him towards the opposite path.
The vampire film “Nosferatu” has received widespread acclaim from numerous critics, and director Robert Eggers is now focusing on werewolves. However, this trend isn’t slowing down; it was announced on Christmas Eve that Christopher Nolan will be adapting “The Odyssey”.
The epic poem “Homer’s The Odyssey” is often seen as the archetypal narrative of a hero’s journey. Numerous films might not have been created without the impact of this timeless work, such as Christopher Nolan’s Interstellar among them. After the announcement, social media was abuzz with people expressing they had never encountered The Odyssey before. This was intriguing since a new adaptation titled The Return, based on Homer’s classic poem, had recently been released.
In addition, the star-studded cast for Nolan’s upcoming adaptation boasts big names like Tom Holland. There’s a bit of debate over whether Holland will play the title character Odysseus or his son Telemachus, as the initial chapters of the original epic tell the story of Telemachus searching for news about his father. As more details about Nolan’s latest adaptation emerge, we’ll find out for sure.
The latest, yet modern news is that studio A24 plans to create a film adaptation of Edgar Allan Poe’s renowned poem “The Masque of the Red Death.” It has been suggested that Sydney Sweeney from Euphoria might join the cast, making this potential project the one I am most eagerly anticipating.
Why I’m so excited for Masque of the Red Death
In the realm of literature, Edgar Allan Poe’s brief tale carries on several conventional elements of the gothic style prevalent during its era. However, it transcends these conventions to serve as a symbolic representation of the unavoidable reality of death. Few have dared to adapt this story, with only a few exceptions such as the 1964 film version and a handful of comic book interpretations by Marvel Comics.
The narrative revolves around a prince who secludes himself within his grand mansion, evading a swiftly spreading illness. In an attempt to escape the contagion, he throws an extravagant ball for other affluent nobles. However, without revealing crucial details, a guest adorned in red makes an entrance, and both the prince and all his guests succumb to the disease as the mysterious red-clad figure introduces the plague into their residence.
As a devoted admirer, what draws me to this tale and eagerly anticipates A24’s adaptation is its captivating visual style rooted in the short story. Each space within the party is distinctively colored, barring red, symbolizing the plague’s absence. This color scheme signifies immersing oneself in all that might ward off death, making the enigmatic figure, clad entirely in red, seemingly pursuing the prince through his residence, an aesthetic I am eagerly waiting to witness A24 bring to life.
This narrative holds intrigue due to its underlying theme, which bears striking resemblances to the COVID-19 pandemic and could be updated for contemporary relevance if A24 chooses that direction. The political commentary woven throughout the tale is certain to be preserved, given A24’s penchant for such themes. As both a horror enthusiast and classic literature scholar, I find numerous potential approaches to adapt this timeless story into a chilling film.
I’m genuinely thrilled about this recent wave of adaptations, and I can’t wait for it to persist. Although there’s no lack of fresh ideas, numerous new stories are based on classic works, and reimagining these classics for contemporary screens could spark even more creativity in the realm of original content.
