As a long-time movie enthusiast who grew up with the enchanting world of cinema, I can’t help but be captivated by the unique connection between Robert Eggers and SpongeBob SquarePants. It is indeed fascinating to see how the underwater cartoon character played a role in introducing iconic figures like Count Orlok to a whole new generation.
Director Robert Eggers has surprisingly chosen SpongeBob SquarePants as a promotional figure for his upcoming horror movie, “Nosferatu.
At the Los Angeles premiere of the movie, held on Thursday, The Hollywood Reporter inquired whether Eggers was aware that the Nickelodeon cartoon had acquainted numerous children with the famous vampire character – Nosferatu (also recognized as Count Orlok). This character occasionally graced the episodes of the show.
The filmmaker acknowledged his familiarity with the SpongeBob-like content and said, “As a child, I used to watch a show called Muppet Babies that played brief clips of movies like Lon Chaney’s Phantom of the Opera and early versions of Cyrano de Bergerac. This cartoon introduced me to many films that I later watched as an older kid, thanks to memories from Muppet Babies. So, in a way, SpongeBob has played a role in my film-watching history.

Additionally, Nicholas Hoult added his thoughts on the trend, humorously admitting he hadn’t yet watched it but expressed, “I suppose I need to revisit more of SpongeBob. And it’s fascinating that this is how people initially discovered it. I hope this new take will serve as a fresh perspective for those who might want to re-experience it.
In Egger’s adaptation of Nosferatu, Bill Skarsgård metamorphoses into a dreadful vampire character, who harbors an enchantment towards a young woman shrouded in mystery (portrayed by Lily Rose-Depp). The appearance of Skarsgård has been mostly concealed in the film’s trailers and promotional content, as the actor himself expressed his eagerness for the audience to witness this monster being set free.

When acting in a movie and portraying a character, it’s a very personal, intimate connection you build with the film,” the actor explained further. “Until its release, it feels like it belongs to you. But once it’s out, it becomes everyone else’s. So, in a sense, it’s a debut, but also a farewell.
Rose-Depp expressed her astonishment upon witnessing Skarsgård’s character debut for the first time, and Emma Corrin concurred, stating that it was an incredible transformation, making it difficult to recognize Bill, yet he managed to infuse the character with a profound human depth and quality, which is truly remarkable.

This movie is such an immersive, transportive experience that I believe it’s the ultimate way to spend Christmas morning.
