On May 8th, it was revealed that the movie “Bhool Chuk Maaf,” featuring Wamiqa Gabbi and Rajkummar Rao, would no longer be hitting theaters as initially planned. Instead, it will debut on Amazon Prime Video on May 16th. In fact, due to the pandemic last year, many filmmakers were compelled to release their films directly on streaming platforms. Here’s a list of them.
1. Shershaah
The movie “Shershaah,” starring Sidharth Malhotra and Kiara Advani, remains one of the most cherished films in Bollywood. This war-themed film, helmed by Vishnuvardhan, is inspired by the real-life story of Captain Vikram Batra who made the ultimate sacrifice during the Kargil War.
The movie, produced by Dharma Productions under Karan Johar’s leadership, had originally been scheduled to hit theaters on July 2, 2021. However, instead of a traditional theater release, it ended up being streamed on Amazon Prime Video starting from August 12, 2021.
2. Gulabo Sitabo
In 2020, the film featuring Amitabh Bachchan and Ayushmann Khurrana, titled Gulabo Sitabo, made its debut. Originally planned for a cinematic release, it ultimately opted for a digital platform premiere and became available globally on Amazon Prime Video. This humorous tale follows the antics of an miserly old man and his impoverished housemate who reside in a decaying mansion.
3. Radhe
Despite Salman Khan’s film “Radhe” making it onto our list, there’s an interesting twist: The movie was initially set to hit theaters on May 22, 2020, but due to unforeseen circumstances, it was delayed and ultimately premiered on May 13, 2021. This special date coincided with Eid al-Fitr in India, where it was made available as premium video on demand on Zee Plex through ZEE5. Meanwhile, the film had a theatrical release overseas.
Under the direction of Prabhudeva, the film showcases Randeep Hooda and Jackie Shroff in prominent positions. In this narrative, Khan assumes the role of an inspector tasked with identifying and apprehending drug traffickers.
4. Ginny Weds Sunny
In 2020, the movie “Ginny Weds Sunny,” starring Yami Gautam and Vikrant Massey, was helmed by director Puneet Khanna. This romantic comedy, which is now available on Netflix, tells a heartwarming story about a determined woman named Ginny who initially refuses Sunny’s marriage proposal. However, an unexpected twist unfolds when Sunny collaborates with Ginny’s mother to win her affection in the end.
