As a long-standing Disneyland Magic Keyholder and Muppets enthusiast, I can’t help but feel nostalgic about the beloved characters that have graced us with their presence for decades. The Sunset Showcase Theater, once home to the iconic Muppet*Vision 3D, holds a special place in my heart, as it was where I first encountered Kermit, Miss Piggy, and the gang during my very first visit to Disney California Adventure Park way back when DCA first opened.
The Muppets might be one of the most beloved yet underutilized properties owned by Walt Disney Studios. Despite their cult following, the characters have begun appearing less and less in the parks, and their footprint is about to get a whole lot smaller as Muppet*Vision 3D leaves Hollywood Studios. However, I think I know the perfect place for the attraction to relocate to if the Imagineers are serious about preserving the attraction, which it sounds like they are.
To put it straightforwardly, it seems more plausible that the show will appear on Disney+ among its upcoming releases rather than being relocated to a theme park. Yet, as a devoted fan of Disney Parks, I can’t help but harbor a touch of optimism. If the powers-that-be wanted to delight Muppets fans with some positive surprises, they might contemplate reviving Muppet*Vision 3D on the West Coast. Perhaps they could reinstall the entire show in the Sunset Showcase Theater at Disney California Adventure Park.
Initially under another name, The Muppets’ performance graced the same stage from when Disney California Adventure (DCA) debuted in 2001 until it was swapped for the Frozen Sing-Along in 2014. Presently, the Sunset Showcase Theater features Mickey’s PhilharMagic 4D show regularly throughout the day.
As a Magic Keyholder at Disneyland, I can assure you that the current show isn’t typically fully booked. It’s definitely worth checking out once or twice, but it doesn’t quite compare to some of the other spectacular attractions at the Disneyland Resort. To be honest, the theater can be a bit tricky for first-timers to locate since it’s nestled away in a secluded corner of Hollywood Land – not exactly the main spotlight!
Reviving the classic attraction “Muppet*Vision 3D” at DCA wouldn’t just preserve a cherished production by Jim Henson, one of his final projects, but it would also inject vitality into Hollywood Land, which currently seems to be struggling and in need of a facelift. It’s been whispered that the area could be razed to construct an “Avatar”-themed land, a project eagerly anticipated by fans of West Coast Disney parks. However, the specific location for this land is yet undecided, with some believing it might be part of the Disneyland Forward initiative.

Concerns about Hollywood Land’s future are understandable, as no one wants to see “Muppet*Vision 3D” shut down again so soon. However, I don’t foresee the Imagineers tearing down that area any time soon (hopefully never). In fact, given that The Muppets have a minimal presence on the West Coast, it could be this popular show that helps revitalize the underappreciated part of the park.
As far as I recall, it’s been since 2021 when Kermit the Frog, Miss Piggy, and their friends last graced Disneyland. This was during the Merriest Nites event that hasn’t come back yet. They rode one of Disneyland’s iconic double-decker buses and sang Christmas tunes to a bustling Main Street.
Given the enthusiastic response from Disneyland fans for interacting more with The Muppets, it’s clear that returning them to their original location in Disney California Adventure (DCA) seems like an obvious decision. Fortunately, this wouldn’t require a significant amount of effort from the Imagineers. They wouldn’t need to construct a new venue or undergo extensive renovations; a fresh coat of paint and new signs to highlight the theater should suffice.
The future of Muppet*Vision 3D is yet uncertain, however, fortunately, the cherished group will continue to have a base in Hollywood Studios as they assume control over the Rock ‘N’ Roller Coaster theme. For now, I’ll be waiting optimistically for their West Coast move to happen sooner rather than later.
