Now That Superman Is Coming To The DCU, Frank Grillo Tells Us How Rick Flag Sr. Feels About The Man Of Steel

As a seasoned gamer with over two decades of comic book-inspired video games under my belt, I can’t help but feel a surge of anticipation as we step into this new chapter of DC Comics storytelling. The arrival of James Gunn and Peter Safran at the helm feels like a breath of fresh air, promising an exciting blend of familiar faces and fresh perspectives.

Prepare yourself for a thrilling new chapter in DC Comics storytelling! After decades of the DCEU (DC Extended Universe), Warner Bros. and DC are set to make some changes, with James Gunn as writer-director and Peter Safran as executive producer spearheading the transition. In July 2025, a new Superman movie will hit theaters, featuring David Corenswet as Superman alongside Rachel Brosnahan (as Lois Lane) and Nicolas Hoult (as Lex Luthor). Contrary to what you may think, this isn’t the beginning of the DCU. Instead, brace yourself for December, when we welcome the debut of the Creature Commandos!

Since James Gunn made a significant impact on the superhero genre with the team-up movie “Guardians of the Galaxy” in the MCU, it’s not surprising that he’s sticking to a well-known approach for his debut project in the new DCU. The upcoming film, Creature Commandos, will draw connections to Gunn’s own “The Suicide Squad,” with events unfolding after Amanda Waller (played by Viola Davis) dispatched a group of villains to Corto Maltese to stop Project Starfish. Despite their success in this mission, Rick Flag Jr. (portrayed by Joel Kinnaman) unfortunately lost his life. Now, with Frank Grillo stepping into the role of Rick Flag Sr., he will play a crucial part in shaping the future of the DCU.

During the last summer, while Superman was engrossed in filming scenes in Cleveland, Ohio, snapshots taken by photographers showed Frank Grillo in action on set, seemingly apprehending David Corenswet’s portrayal of Superman. It seemed that way to us. When I got a chance to talk with Grillo about his projects, particularly Creature Commandos, and his involvement in the DCU, I couldn’t help but ask him about his personal thoughts on Superman. And Grillo shared with TopMob:

It seems to me that Rick Flag comprehends and admires Superman for who he is. However, they might hold contrasting beliefs, leading to some discordant perspectives, as far as I can tell. Yet, there’s a sense of reverence from Flag towards Superman, and I believe he holds him in high esteem. Let’s wait and see how their relationship unfolds.

You can’t catch a sneak peek of “Creature Commandos” until it premieres on Max on December 5. On this day, the initial two episodes from the seven-episode series will be released, and you wouldn’t want to miss watching them right away.

In this new story introduced by James Gunn, DC fans can anticipate a unique portrayal that sets the mood. Previously in DCEU films, Superman was revered as a divine figure, with Batman (played by Ben Affleck) taking drastic measures to control his power and impact. However, Gunn’s interpretation of Superman will be more hopeful and optimistic. Yet, it is noted that Rick Flag Sr., portrayed by Grillo, may find himself at odds with Superman due to differing beliefs. Let’s see how this dynamic unfolds.

Regarding the animated series known as “Creature Commandos”, it shares some similarities with “Suicide Squad” in terms of plot. It features Amanda Waller gathering an unusual team – a squad of monstrous beings, if you will – for a mission that could turn out quite chaotic. Keep tuned as we delve deeper into the world of Creature Commandos, with more updates from Grillo and his cast members on the way. Stay connected!
