'Now You Wanna Be Friends With Me?': Boy Meets World Alum Recalls NSYNC's Set Visits And Later Learning That Justin Timberlake 'Didn't Like' Him

As a die-hard fan of ’90s sitcoms and nostalgia, I can’t help but feel a sense of camaraderie with the cast of ‘Boy Meets World.’ The latest reunion on the ‘Pod Meets World’ podcast was a delightful trip down memory lane. It was fascinating to learn about Matthew Lawrence’s run-in with Justin Timberlake, back when NSYNC graced the set of our beloved show.

25 years after the end of ’90s sitcom “Boy Meets World”, its stars continue to honor the show’s legacy by frequently gathering for discussions about it. Recently, Rider Strong, Danielle Fishel, Will Friedle, and Matthew Lawrence got together to share memories from the past, with Lawrence sharing an amusing story about how he may have left a negative impression on Justin Timberlake during NSYNC’s visits to the “Boy Meets World” set.

Matthew Lawrence portrayed the character Jack during the final three seasons (1997-2000) of “Boy Meets World,” a period that coincided with the fierce competition between NSYNC and the Backstreet Boys. On the “Pod Meets World” podcast, led by Rider Strong, Danielle Fishel, and Will Friedle, Lawrence shared an interesting conversation he had with Justin Timberlake concerning their on-set interactions during “Boy Meets World.

It seems that back when NSYNC frequently visited our film set, there may have been some tension between us. Years later, I ran into Justin Timberlake, and he informed me that he had never taken a liking to me. He directly expressed his displeasure to me at the time. Surprisingly, this incident was not something I recalled, and he reminded me of it by saying, “Now you want to be friends with me? You were so rude on set!

Lawrence shared that he had been an avid supporter of the singer when he conversed with Timberlake, during the timeframe when his first solo album “Justified” was unveiled in 2002. Notably, this coincided with just a couple of years following the conclusion of “Boy Meets World” in its seventh season. (You can re-experience the entire series now by subscribing to Disney+.)

It appears that Timberlake’s past co-stars showed considerable surprise upon hearing his comments, yet their work together revealed much more about him than Justin Timberlake learned during the NSYNC visit sets. Lawrence continued by saying…

In a somewhat bashful manner, I harbored feelings for Danielle, and it seemed as if an endless stream of men were frequently approaching her on set, attempting to win her affection.

Danielle Fishel encountered numerous challenges during the early seasons of “Boy Meets World” – criticism from the showrunner being one of them soon after she got the role – but the character she played, Topanga, had many young viewers smitten. This affection was not limited to ordinary fans; it extended to Matthew Lawrence and even some members of NSYNC!

Though Topanga’s love was ultimately for Cory Matthews (despite Danielle Fishel expressing regrets about their marriage), Rider Strong humorously suggested on “Pod Meets World” that the five band members were consistently revolving around Danielle, as if in a never-ending circle.

In relation to this, Matthew Lawrence didn’t have an opportunity to clarify his slightly distant behavior towards Justin Timberlake, but Will Friedle recounted a tale linked to NSYNC. During one of their get-togethers, Friedle and Lawrence had a doll representation of the baby born on Season 6 of a character named Matthew. Friedle narrated this incident by saying:

At one instance, they handed us the baby doll and a couple of individuals, possibly Justin Timberlake and Joey Fatone, were present… I was simply pretending with the doll, stuffing a cigarette into its mouth and simulating coughs. Justin seemed taken aback and exclaimed, “Are you truly out of your mind?” … He essentially said, “Dude, this is beyond strange!” To which I responded, “Yes, this is our usual routine, this is what we go through in a day’s work.

Although it appears Matthew Lawrence and Justin Timberlake never developed a friendship, the Boy Meets World cast recalling when NSYNC visited their set brought to mind a playful prank from an episode during the seventh and last season. Eric and Jack were left considering living in Topanga and Angela’s former dorm, which wasn’t only about inheriting stuffed animals, nail polish, and an abundance of pink. There was also a colossal Backstreet Boys poster that I can’t help but admit I would have cherished on my wall during those days.

The boys jokingly argued about the poster for a while, with Jack enthusiastically proclaiming “BSB is awesome!” to lighten up the moment. They had a minor spat over who was considered the cutest member, with Eric claiming it was Howie Dorough and Jack believing it was Nick Carter. In summary, it’s a playful banter that I find amusing, especially knowing that Justin Timberlake reportedly harbored some tension towards some cast members of Boy Meets World.
